Piles combines a distinctive coastal landscape with traces of history in its town center. Playa de Piles, the Torre Vigía and the Santa Bárbara Parish Church represent different aspects of the town. There are also festivals held in specific months and the annual Semana Deportiva. This means you can choose when to travel based not only on the beach and history, but also on a specific event highlight.

Playa de Piles

Playa de Piles is characterized by fine sand, calm waters, dunes and the distinctive vegetation of the dunes. The beach offers water sports, as well as areas for children and for exercise. These activities and facilities may vary seasonally; if a particular one is important to your plans, check its current status in advance. Playa de Piles is accessible to people with reduced mobility. Check the local accessibility details again before your trip.

Between the Beach and the Town Center

The historic center and the beach are separated by agricultural land. This land is suitable for walks and bike rides. If you would like to do more than focus your stay on the beach and architecture, you can plan to spend time in this area as another way to stay active.

Coastal Tower and Historic Traces

The Torre Vigía is a Renaissance coastal watchtower built next to the beach in 1577 for defensive purposes. Its construction date and location point to its original role in coastal defense. The tower is listed as a monument and is protected under the Generalitat Valenciana’s generic BIC designation. It was restored in 1986 and included in the historic-artistic heritage. The dates have different roles: 1577 marks its construction, while 1986 marks its restoration and inclusion in the heritage.

In Piles’ historic center, traces of its Moorish origins remain in the layout of some streets, including Baix, Carreró and del Forn. The Santa Bárbara Parish Church dates from the 18th century and stands on the site of a former mosque. Its bell tower is Baroque and has a rectangular ground plan. Compared with the Torre, which is associated with the Renaissance and a defensive function, the church is notable for the former use of its site and the Baroque form of its bell tower.

Festivals and When to Visit

In May, Piles holds patron saint festivities in honor of San Felipe Neri; in December, there are festivities for Santa Bárbara. The two occasions therefore take place in different months. The December festivities are dedicated to Santa Bárbara, as is the parish church in the town center; the same name thus appears in both the festival calendar and the town’s history. If you would like to coordinate your stay with a festival, check the specific dates and program in advance. Another event highlight is the Semana Deportiva, held every year and widely known in the comarca. Dates and programs may change; check the latest local information before planning a trip around it.
