Vallanca combines a circular walk of around an hour and a half among long-lived trees with traditional rural architecture and a religious tradition that takes place every seven years. When planning your trip, consider what you are looking for: a specific hiking route, or a visit centred on the Septenario de la Virgen de Santerón? The pilgrimage takes place only once every seven years, so confirm the dates and route arrangements before travelling.
Hiking trails and traditional rural architecture
The Ruta de los Árboles Monumentales is approximately 4.5 kilometres long, follows a circular route and takes about one hour and 30 minutes. It is classed as easy. These details give you a specific timeframe for the hike; check local conditions before setting out. This interpretive walking trail passes through the Umbria de la Huerta natural area along the Bohigues River and over Mount El Plano. Long-lived black pines, Spanish junipers and walnut trees grow along the route.
The Ruta de Bohilgues y de Val (PR-CV 131.6) offers a different perspective: it starts in Vallanca and provides views of the Hoz del río Bohigues. The two trails therefore differ in their points of reference: the Ruta de los Árboles focuses on its circular route, distance and duration, while the Ruta de Bohilgues y de Val starts in Vallanca and offers views of the gorge.
The Ruta de las Barracas takes in traditional shelters that once provided protection from the cold and a place to spend the night for walkers, especially shepherds. Here, the focus is on how the shelters were used in the past and on life on the road. The area of El Cerro de Vallanca is also home to the Barraca de Josezón, a large dry-stone structure.
Pilgrimage, churches and former uses
The Septenario de la Virgen de Santerón takes place every seven years in September and has been celebrated without interruption for more than 300 years. The pilgrimage leads from Vallanca to the Ermita de Santerón in the municipality of Algarra, in the province of Cuenca. From 16 to 26 September, it includes collecting the image of the Virgin, carrying it to Vallanca, and holding a novena and processions there. If you are travelling for the occasion, check the specific dates and route beforehand.
The Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles is a Baroque building with an elongated floor plan, a wide central nave and six interconnected side chapels. It acquired its present appearance at the end of the 17th century, replacing an older place of worship. The interior features black-and-white sgraffito decoration, considered particularly well preserved in the local area.
In the hamlet of Negrón, which belongs to Vallanca, you can visit the Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua, a Franciscan church dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. The hamlet also has a traditional washhouse. Together, these places offer a glimpse of Vallanca’s religious and everyday architecture without requiring a specific walking route.
The Molino de la Tosca and the Cueva del Hocino offer further insight into former uses. The Molino de la Tosca is a restored former grain mill. The Cueva del Hocino is a natural cavity in tufa rock that was once a meeting place. The mill and the cave thus reflect different historical functions: grain processing on the one hand, and a former meeting place on the other.
Botanical tours and mountain biking
The Ruta de las plantas medicinales in Vallanca offers guided botanical tours every weekend in 2026. Visitors can identify plant species and learn about their properties. Advance booking is required; check availability before travelling.
Mountain biking is another activity on offer: the Centro BTT Santerón is listed as one of the mountain bike centres of the Valencian Community. Alongside the hiking trails, this offers another perspective on activities associated with Vallanca, while the churches, shelters and former places of use add a cultural dimension.
