In Yátova, the distinctive themes of a trip are reflected in tangible traces: a fortified Iberian settlement, medieval architectural remains and dry-stone structures tell of past uses; nature trails lead through forests and cultivated landscapes. Water also shapes some destinations, though not always in the same way: the pools and cascades at Cueva de las Palomas form during periods of heavy rainfall. This makes it easy to tailor your stay to your interests, from local history to hikes and landscapes.

Nature trails and landscapes

The PRV-115 trail starts in the centre of Yátova and is of moderate difficulty. No special equipment or training is required. Along the way, dry farming gives way to carob, olive and almond trees, scrubland and pine forests. Dry-stone walls support the trail on the mountainside. If you would like to compare the route with a circular trail, the Ruta de los Cucos is a circular trail accessible to everyone, connecting various dry-stone structures associated with former activities in the mountains around Yátova.

Another option is the Ruta del Agua del río Juanes, also known as Río Chico. It starts upstream in the municipality of Yátova. Near Cueva de las Palomas, part of the trail runs alongside the Juanes River and past geomorphological formations created by water erosion. The cave’s rugged landscape also features pools and cascades that form during periods of heavy rainfall. Its main attraction is a waterfall about 20 metres high, which flows most strongly after rain.

Paraje Natural Municipal de Tabarla has been a municipal nature area since 2007 and covers 68.42 hectares. Its characteristic wildlife includes mountain goats, Iberian hares, foxes, wild boar, genets and red squirrels, as well as numerous amphibians, reptiles and birds. Tabarla also has a recreational area and a section with paelleros for picnics in a natural setting; confirm local conditions before your visit. Wild camping is not permitted in the nature area. Check the rules in force before travelling. A trail in Tabarla is easy to walk and 9.1 kilometres long.

Motrotón is another destination for hikers: a route leads from the municipality of Yátova to this striking local mountain. Trail conditions and signage may change, so check the local situation before setting out.

Architectural history and archaeological heritage

Different eras come together in the townscape. Calle del Arco is the only surviving medieval architectural feature in Yátova and is included on all town routes. Iglesia Parroquial de los Santos Reyes is classified as a Bien de Relevancia Local. The Baroque building dates from the 17th century and was remodelled in the 18th century. Its bell tower was built on the site of Yátova’s former mosque.

Another 17th-century building is El Pozo de la Nieve. It was used as an ice store to preserve food and is one of the few buildings of its kind to survive in a town centre. Los Cucos, meanwhile, are historic dry-stone structures that provided shelter for shepherds, charcoal burners and farmers. Their connection to the Ruta de los Cucos also makes them part of the area’s landscape and local history.

Pico de los Ajos adds a fortified Iberian settlement in the Sierra Martés to these historic sites. The site was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2016; parts of it have been consolidated and signposted. It has been open to visitors since 2020. From the car park at Refugio de montaña del Manquillo, an easy trail follows the GR-7 to the site. Guided tours have been organised since 2020 and must be booked in advance. As local access and booking arrangements may change, check them before your visit.

Planning visits and dates

Visits to the Colección Museográfica take place during library opening hours or by contacting the Ayuntamiento de Yátova in advance. Arrange your visit beforehand using one of these options. The Feria de Turismo, Artesanía y Gastronomía may also be a good reason to choose a particular time to travel: it takes place on the first weekend in June, although the exact dates may vary from year to year. Associations and traders from Yátova gather in Parque de San Vicente for the event. Check the dates and event arrangements before travelling.
