Gestalgar can be discovered through a variety of landmarks: from the ruins of a Muslim fortress and an aqueduct to historic religious buildings, hiking trails, scenic spots and local cuisine. These different themes offer ways to plan a stay around your own interests.

Fortress, Aqueduct and Historic Buildings

Castillo de los Murones is designated a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural and is a 12th-century Muslim fortress. The ruins preserve the complex’s perimeter structures; the cistern in the castle courtyard is the only building still standing. Access to the ruins may change, so check before your visit.

At the Los Calicantos Aqueduct, two visible sections can be distinguished: one is cut into the rock, and the other has been excavated. The excavated section is about 30 metres long and has an overflow channel. The approximate length refers to this section, not the entire aqueduct.

Iglesia Parroquial de la PurĂsima ConcepciĂłn is an 18th-century neoclassical religious building. Access to the interior may vary, so check in advance whether it is possible to visit. Palacio de los Condes de l'Alcudia y Gestalgar is also known as Casa Señorial and Torre de los Condes de l’AlcĂșdia. The palace dates from the 17th century and was home to the lords of the town. Ermita Santos AbdĂłn y SenĂ©n has an atrium with arches and a bell gable. Its grounds include the Stations of the Cross and small chapels.

The remains of Presa Vieja, dating from the early 20th century, offer a more recent historical point of interest.

Hiking Trails and Archaeological Sites

The Ruta Familiar is a circular route about 4.5 kilometres long, with an estimated duration of two hours. Seasonal conditions may affect trail conditions. Allow for the approximate duration and check conditions before setting out.

The PR-CV 290 hiking trail crosses the municipal areas of Gestalgar, Sot de Chera and Chulilla. It connects nearby places that are separated by roads. This offers a different perspective on the area from the shorter circular route.

The rock paintings at Abrigo de las Clochas include works of Levantine, macro-schematic and schematic art. The two rock shelters are in the Barranco de las Colochas, also known as Clochas, between Pico de Santa MarĂa and Pico del Burgal.

The Sima de la Tierra de Roya contains stalactites and stalagmites, among other features. Access is reserved for specialists, particularly speleologists; a key can be requested from the town hall.

Landscape, Water and Local Culture

The Área Recreativa de la Peña MarĂa recreation area offers shade beneath a large mulberry tree. It has water from one of Gestalgar’s most important springs, as well as stone tables and benches. As facilities may change, check the current situation before your visit.

A bathing area in Gestalgar is designated a “playa continental,” or inland beach. Bathing conditions and access may change seasonally; check both if you are planning a visit.

Each stop on a cultural route in Gestalgar has an explanatory panel; there are 15 panels in total. On 2 February, the patron saint’s festival in honour of San Blas includes a Eucharistic celebration, the distribution of small candles, Vaquillas, the Toro embolado and dances.

Gestalgar’s traditional cuisine includes Arroz con caricas, Arroz con bierzas, Olla “sulsia”, Gazpacho and Ajo arriero. These dishes add a specific culinary dimension to travel plans, alongside the town’s historical and scenic attractions.
