Gandía combines nature and cultural experiences, each offering a different focus when planning a visit. Paraje Natural Municipal Parpalló-Borrell is a protected area with designated trails; buildings and museums reveal the area’s architecture, urban history and prehistory. The Museo Fallero adds Fallas culture to the mix. At Playa de l'Ahuir, wooden walkways lead to the beach while also protecting the dunes. If you choose specific travel dates, you can also take the Fira i Festes into account.
Nature Trails and Beach Access
Paraje Natural Municipal Parpalló-Borrell covers 549.50 hectares. It has been protected by the Generalitat Valenciana since 2004. Visitors can explore the local flora and fauna along designated routes and trails. A visit to the protected area is therefore a natural choice for both walking and observing nature. Before your visit, check which trails are currently open.
At Playa de l'Ahuir, wooden walkways protect the dunes and provide pedestrian access to the beach from Gandía or Xeraco. Access arrangements may change; check them before your visit.
Architectural History and Archaeological Collections
The Palau Ducal combines Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Gothic architectural elements. For architecture enthusiasts, its particular appeal lies in this blend of different styles within a single building.
Towers and sections of wall from the Murallas de Gandia have survived, integrated into houses in the historic center. This urban history is especially tangible in the structural elements incorporated into the center’s buildings.
The Museu Arqueològic de Gandia (MAGA) is housed in the former Hospital de San Marcos, founded by Alfonso el Viejo in the 14th century. Its permanent exhibition focuses on the prehistory of La Safor and covers, among other topics, Paleolithic hunter-gatherers and Neolithic farmers and herders. It thus highlights two different prehistoric ways of life. MAGA also displays archaeological finds from Cova del Parpalló. The cave is home to one of Europe’s most important archaeological sites from the Upper Paleolithic.
When exploring the archaeological collections, it is helpful to distinguish between the two: Cova del Parpalló is an important Upper Paleolithic site, while MAGA displays finds from the cave. The site itself and the museum objects are therefore two different points of reference for the same subject.
Fallas Culture and Festival Dates
The Museo Fallero offers an immersive overview of the Fallas festival. Its permanent exhibition includes original traditional costumes and Fallas accessories. Unlike MAGA, which focuses on prehistory, this museum centers on festival culture; the costumes and accessories provide tangible examples from its collection.
The Fira i Festes takes place between late September and early October and honors the city’s patron saint, San Francisco de Borja. For four days, the streets and squares of the old town host themed markets, folk performances, traditional events, music concerts and theater performances. The program is aimed at all age groups. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific dates for your year of travel.
