In San Antonio, local history, wineries and annual events come together. The Church of San Antonio and the Teatro GarcĂa Berlanga tell the story of different cultural building periods; at Dominio de la Vega, guided tours and tastings take centre stage. If you would like to combine your stay with a celebration, you can plan around the festivals in January or June. The Turia-Cabriel nature trail also leads into the surrounding area, crossing the Magro River.
Church and theatre: two chapters in the town’s history
The Church of San Antonio replaced the original 15th-century church. Its bell tower has been preserved to this day. The church therefore brings together two building phases: the earlier tower remains, while the place of worship replaced the older church.
Another historic building is the Teatro GarcĂa Berlanga, built in 1914. Its restoration in 2007 helped promote cultural life in San Antonio. Together, the church and theatre offer different insights into the town’s history: part of the earlier building survives at the church, while the theatre’s restoration forms part of the town’s more recent cultural history.
Wineries and tastings
Dominio de la Vega offers guided tours of the winery and vineyards, including commented tastings of wines and cavas. Reservations are required, so plan your visit in advance. The tour combines a look at the winery and vineyards with an explanation of the drinks being tasted.
Another option is the “Nuestras RaĂces” experience. It combines a winery visit and tasting with a lunch featuring typical regional products. This sets it apart from the guided tour with a commented wine and cava tasting by adding a meal. Confirm the availability of “Nuestras RaĂces” before your trip.
Casa del Conde is also part of the historic winery heritage of San Antonio de Requena. Dominio de la Vega has carefully restored the building, which dates from the late 19th century. The original wine presses and underground wine vats have been preserved. These historic features offer a tangible insight into the winery’s former use. Casa del Conde and the tours on offer are two distinct aspects of this wine heritage.
Festivals on two different dates
The patron saint festivals in honour of Saint Anthony of Padua take place in mid-June. Events include processions and open-air dancing. On 17 January, by contrast, Saint Anthony the Abbot is honoured with a large bonfire, followed by a communal dinner. The two dates therefore offer different occasions: June brings patron saint festivals with processions and dancing, while January combines a bonfire and dinner. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates and programme in advance.
Plan your nature trail visit and arrival
The Turia-Cabriel nature trail crosses the Magro River near San Antonio de Requena. Route files in GPX and Google Earth formats are available for the Siete Aguas–Jaraguas section. The downloads relate to this section; the crossing of the Magro is another specific landmark on the nature trail. When planning, you can therefore consider the route information and the available digital route files separately.
Access to San Antonio de Requena railway station is available daily from 05:51 to 22:01. If your arrival depends on this, check the information before travelling. Along with a winery tour booked in advance or a planned festival date, these are practical details to bear in mind when scheduling your stay.
