Several themes come together in Alboraya to help you plan your trip: chufa and horchata, a historic townscape, the irrigated Huerta and a coastline with an unspoilt beach. You can tailor your stay to different interests, such as local food culture, architectural history, or landscapes and walking routes.
Discover chufa and horchata
Traditional horchata is made by hand every morning at Alboraya’s horchata establishments. The Orxata Experience offers an insight into cultivation and production: the guided visit includes an organic chufa field, a facility that makes natural horchata, and a tasting. Check the establishment’s dates before your trip.
The Museo de la Horchata y de la Chufa is located in the Alquería El Machistre. It explains how horchata is made and chufa is grown, and covers both present-day marketing and the situation two hundred years ago. The guided visit includes the museum, the Alquería’s outdoor areas and a horchata tasting; advance booking is required.
Another event on the local calendar is Día de la Horchata. The festival takes place every year in July, usually on the first or second Wednesday. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the exact date.
Townscape, architectural history and tradition
The historic centre retains its street layout, as well as rural and urban houses in the Modernisme and Art Deco styles from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. El Pont del Moro is another historical landmark: the bridge dates from around the late 15th or early 16th century and bears visible marks from wagon wheels.
The building structure of the Casa de Conde de Zanoguera dates back to the 17th century. Today, it houses the tourist information office, the headquarters of the “Chufa de Valencia” designation of origin, and municipal exhibitions and activities. If you would like to plan a visit to a particular exhibition or activity, check what is currently on offer in advance.
By the sea, on the right bank of the Barranco del Carraixet, stands the Ermita dels Peixets. It commemorates the Miracle dels Peixets, which, according to legend, is said to have taken place here in 1348. On Whit Monday, the people of Alboraya celebrate El Miracle dels Peixets with a pilgrimage from the town to the Ermita. This brings a historic site and a tradition that is still observed today into direct connection.
Huerta, water and nature
The Huerta landscape includes cultivated fields, irrigation channels, country lanes, barracas and alquerías. It was shaped by an irrigation system that includes the Acequia Real de Moncada, the Canal del Turia and other channels managed by the Tribunal de los Aigües. These channels are designed for gravity-fed irrigation. Alboraya also forms part of the agricultural area of the historic irrigation system of l’Horta de València, recognised by the FAO as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS).
The Barranco del Carraixet can also be explored from a nature perspective: waterbirds use the section near Alboraya as a breeding area throughout the year and as a stopover during migration. For nature enthusiasts, these are two distinct seasonal roles: year-round breeding and stopovers during migration.
Coast and routes around Alboraya
Playa Els Peixets is the only unspoilt beach in Alboraya. Its landscape includes dunes, golden sand and pebbles. The coast is therefore a destination in its own right, alongside the historic centre and the agricultural landscape of the Huerta.
The Vía Verde Xurra runs through Alboraya and connects the town with València and other localities. A separate route is described for the section along the Barranco del Carraixet: the route in the Alboraya section starts at the crossing over the Barranco and follows its right bank to the mouth.
Getting there and planning your stay
Alboraya can be reached from Valencia on Metro lines 3 (Rafelbuñol–Aeropuerto) and 9 (Alboraia Peris Aragón–Ribarroja de Túria). As transport connections may change, check current services before your trip. For your itinerary, you can then choose a focus: horchata and chufa lead to agriculture and production, the historic centre to architecture and local history, and the Huerta and Carraixet to irrigation and nature.
