Puig offers a mix of coastal landscapes, Valencian cultural heritage and regional cuisine. The shoreline at Santa Elvira-La Torreta Beach is shaped by sand, rocks, pebbles and breakwaters; the monastery, historic buildings and a printing museum offer glimpses into different chapters of history. There is also a self-guided art walk and a recurring spring event. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping these different highlights and their respective visiting arrangements in mind.
Monastery and architectural history
The Royal Monastery of Santa MarĂa del Puig combines a long history with several distinctive architectural features. The original single-nave church was built in 1238 on the orders of James I. The monastery includes two cloisters, a Gothic hall, the SalĂłn Real, the Hall of the Order of the Knights of El Puig, and the church. Guided tours take visitors through the main rooms. If you plan to take a tour, check the current schedule in advance.
Several rooms in the monastery house the Museu de la Impremta i de les Arts Grà fiques. Its three separate yet complementary collections explore the history of printing and the graphic arts in the Valencian Community. According to those responsible for the museum, it is considered Spain’s first printing museum and Europe’s second most important, after the one in Mainz. Its focus is therefore on the history of printing and graphic arts, not just the monastery’s architecture.
The Cartuja de Ara Christi tells a different story of architecture: built in 1585, it comprises a church, a main cloister, two smaller cloisters, a chapter house, a refectory, gardens and stables. In 1996, it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The Torre de Guaita dates from the second half of the 16th century and was built to defend against Algerian pirates; it was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2002.
The Ermita de Sant Jordi commemorates the Battle of El Puig in 1237, which took place at the site of the chapel. Allegorical mosaics depict the battle. The chapel can be visited as part of the theatrical route “La espada perdida de Jaume I” by prior reservation.
Coast, landscapes and trails
Santa Elvira-La Torreta Beach is 750 metres long and made up of sand, rocks and pebbles. A series of breakwaters forms small coves. The beaches of El Puig have facilities including toilets, children’s playgrounds, sports areas, boardwalks and a monitoring service. Play-Puig Beach also has an accessible beach area. Since beach facilities can change, check the current situation before your visit.
Those who want to discover art outdoors can take the self-guided “ruta de las esculturas” walk. Along the route, visitors can discover eleven works by leading Valencian artists. The “Gymkana familiar en la naturaleza” offers a different kind of activity: the trail runs along the beaches of El Puig, introduces the flora and fauna of the dune ecosystems, and combines learning with fun challenges.
Panoramic views are another part of the landscape. From the Ermita de Santa Bárbara, you can see the coastal area of El Puig and its surroundings. Other panoramic views in Puig take in the town, the sea, the Huerta and the Sierra Calderona.
The activities also vary in how they need to be planned: the art walk is self-guided, you should check the schedule for monastery tours, and the theatrical route to the Ermita de Sant Jordi requires a prior reservation. This lets you decide in advance whether you prefer an independent walk, a guided tour or an activity that requires a reservation.
Spring cuisine and regional dishes
The Jornadas Gastronómicas del Puig takes place every spring. Local restaurants offer menus that share a focus on traditional seasonal vegetables from the comarca de l’Horta Nord. If the event is important to your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.
There is also a specific culinary guide, even outside the event dates: in El Puig, you can try dishes such as “arròs a banda”, “arròs del senyoret”, “fideuà de pato” and “Olla de Santa Pere”. Together with the spring menus, these offer two different starting points for planning your meals: a recurring event featuring seasonal vegetables and a selection of named Mediterranean dishes.
