Marines brings together the landscapes of Serra Calderona Natural Park and the historic townscape of Marines Viejo. Local festival traditions and a distinctive regional culinary speciality add to its appeal.
Landscapes and Trails
The municipality of Marines encompasses some of the most beautiful landscapes, springs and mountains in Serra Calderona Natural Park. If youâre considering nature as part of your travel plans, youâll find a range of points of interest here: the landscape itself, springs and the mountain scenery. The PRV-8 hiking route passes through scenic areas. The Ruta del Agua lets you explore several springs in the Sierra Calderona.
The two routes have different focuses: the PRV-8 highlights the scenic landscape, while the Ruta del Agua centres on several springs. The Ărea Recreativa Fuente del RincĂłn recreation area is also in Marines. This offers several named places and routes through which to explore the natural surroundings, without combining them into a single trail or excursion.
Townscape and History
Marines Viejo offers a distinctive way to explore the areaâs history. Its cobbled streets and houses combine typical Valencian forms with architecture influenced by AragĂłn. You can also visit the Iglesia del SantĂsimo Cristo del PerdĂłn in Marines Viejo. The streetscape, architecture and church offer different ways to get to know the town beyond its landscapes, through its built environment.
The Torre Olla is a square tower in a former Arab settlement. Over the centuries, an alquerĂa developed around the tower and remained in use until the 19th century; the tower can be seen in the distance from Marines Viejo. Another historic site is Castillo del Real: this Islamic fortress dates from the 11th century and lies on the boundary between Marines Viejo and Olocau. Here, a tower visible from afar and a fortress with its own historical context stand side by side.
Festivals and Local Cuisine
The Festa de San Antonio brings together several traditions: at dusk, a large bonfire is lit in the square; the festival also features dancing, a nighttime torrĂ and the blessing of animals. Caldereta and rollos are handed out; they are made according to traditional recipes in communal ovens. Ollica de cardos is a distinctive speciality of Marinesâ local cuisine, adding a regional touch to the culinary experience.
The main day of the Fiestas Patronales in Marines is 6 August. The programme includes exhibitions, classical music concerts, open-air dances and mascletĂ s. This offers a different focus for planning your trip than nature trails or historic buildings: festival traditions and local cuisine are reasons to discover Marines through its cultural and culinary offerings, too.
