Vistabella Del Maestrazgo brings together trails through the town center and the Penyagolosa landscape with a rich architectural heritage. A short walk, viewpoints and longer routes each offer something different. The town’s history can also be explored at specific sites: preserved sections of the walls, a Renaissance church and buildings with very different historical chapters.
Architectural history in the town center
The medieval walls have survived in more than one location. Remains can be found in portals, lanes and houses; masonry ruins also stand at the edge of the built-up area. The Ruta dels detalls is an approximately one-kilometer circular route through the town center, offering an opportunity to take in the layout of the town on a short walk. Allow around 20 to 40 minutes.
The Església Parroquial de l’Assumpció de Nostra Senyora is an important Renaissance church. Its façade was designed by Joan Anglés and has ten niches. The Ermita de Sant Antoni tells a different architectural story: it dates back to the 14th century and is Romanesque in style.
Casa Polo and the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Loreto each offer a distinct historical perspective. Casa Polo is an 18th-century manor house and was used as a field hospital in 1936 during the Spanish Civil War. The current building of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Loreto dates from the late 16th century. It houses mystical wall paintings as well as an image of the Virgin of Loreto.
Walks, views and trails
For planning purposes, the difference between the two trail lengths mentioned is useful: the Ruta dels detalls is a short circular walk in the town center; the CamĂ dels Pinarets from Vistabella to the Ermitorio de Sant Joan de Penyagolosa is about nine kilometers long. The Ermitorio is in the municipality of Vistabella del Maestrazgo.
The CamĂ dels Pinarets offers views of the Pla de Vistabella plain and the summit of Penyagolosa. Monumental trees can be seen in the Sant Joan pine forests along the route, including Pi de les Quatre Forques and Pi del PlanĂ s. The Mirador del Calvari offers a 360-degree view of Vistabella, the Mediterranean Sea, Penyagolosa, the Serra de la Batalla and the Pla de Vistabella.
The Parc Natural de Penyagolosa extends across the municipalities of Vistabella del Maestrat, Xodos and Villahermosa del RĂo. The nature park offers opportunities for hiking and outdoor experiences; the summit of Penyagolosa reaches 1,813 meters. Part of the CamĂ dels Pelegrins de Les Useres runs through Vistabella del Maestrazgo. The trail was declared a natural monument because of its biodiversity and landscapes.
Another option in Penyagolosa is a bookable Nordic walking experience in the mountains, with an approximately 8.5-kilometer out-and-back route. If you plan to take part, check current availability. The stated trail length is a guide to the overall distance; no starting point is specified.
Traditions and practical information
The Sant Antoni festival includes a procession, the blessing of animals, a bonfire and donkey races. As dates and programs may vary, it is worth checking the details for your intended visit period. Another recurring tradition is the three annual pilgrimages, when residents of Vistabella make their way to the Ermitorio de Sant Joan de Penyagolosa.
