Almazora offers a range of options for a cultural or nature-focused stay: toy collections, archaeological traces, a protected landscape at the mouth of the Millars, and festivals throughout the year. When planning your visit, it is worth choosing your focus first—museums and the old town, the river landscape, or a stay during a festival.
Toy History and Archaeological Finds
The Museu del Joguet d’Almassora was established on 22 December 2010. Its changing annual exhibitions display around 1,100 toys from the historical collection of the Arenós and Agut families. The collection is divided into five periods spanning 1890 to 1999: from early toys through cardboard and tin, as well as a wartime interruption, to plastic, television and the Didó movement. This arrangement makes it possible to follow the changing themes and materials represented in the collection.
The Museo Municipal de Almassora focuses on the prehistoric settlement of TorrellĂł de Boverot and its necropolis. More than 100 objects tell their story, spanning the 8th century BC to the 1st century AD. The museum also explains ancient burial customs and grave goods used in cremations. The collections thus offer different historical perspectives: one traces the history of toys, while the other explores early settlement and burial practices.
Old Town, Buildings and History on the Mijares
The old town dates back to a Christian settlement in the 13th century. Surviving sections of the La Murà wall date from the 14th and 15th centuries. Medieval arches from the 14th century stand in Plaza Mayor, where the town market was once held. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora is a Baroque-Neoclassical church dating from 1685–1691 and 1864; it is designated a monument of local interest.
Almazora Castle is now a ruin of Muslim origin, set on a strategically located promontory above the Mijares River. Part of its structure is still visible. Remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages, as well as traces of Iberian inhabitants, have also been found at the castle site. Visitors interested in the town’s history will therefore find several historical layers here, distinct from the old town’s medieval buildings.
Millars Estuary and Outdoor Routes
The protected landscape at the mouth of the Millars River was designated in 2011. It stretches for 14 kilometres and encompasses Almassora, Vila-real and Burriana. The protected area includes a ZEPA bird protection zone, a LIC site and wetlands listed in the regional wetlands catalogue. The landscape offers opportunities for birdwatching and hiking, including around Les Goles and along the Senda del Botánico Calduch.
Another option for outdoor activities is the Ermita de Santa Quiteria, a natural setting on the banks of the Mijares in Almassora. The Senda Verde connects Santa Quitèria with Almassora beach and is designed as a walking and cycling route to the hermitage. As local route conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out. Platja del Pla de la Torre is listed as one of Almassora’s beaches.
Festivals and Markets Throughout the Year
The Fiestas de Santa Quiteria take place in May and are recognised as a festival of provincial tourist interest. The main day is 22 May: it features 22 cauldrons of rice with chicken, followed by a procession from the Ermita de Santa Quiteria to Almassora. The Festes del Roser are celebrated on the first Sunday in October and include a communal Pa-i-porta dinner. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates and programme in advance.
The non-permanent markets take place on Tuesdays and Fridays and comprise around 87 stalls, including food stalls. Market days and the range of stalls may change; if the market is important to your plans, check the details before visiting. The festival dates and markets provide different calendar-based occasions, while the museums, buildings and river landscape offer other ways to shape your stay.
