Fossils, hiking trails and evidence of local traditions give Cinctorres many different facets. You can get to know the town through its palaeontological finds, make a hike or bike ride the focus of your visit, and explore historical collections and regional cuisine. Which themes you combine depends on whether you would rather spend your time outdoors or explore the town’s history and customs.
Dinosaur Finds and Visitor Information
A total of 937 fossils have been recovered at the Ana site. Most are from dinosaurs dating back around 126 million years. The site is set up for visitors and has information panels and replicas of dinosaur bones. Check the current visitor arrangements in advance. The Dinomania experience includes a guided visit to the dinosaur site in Cinctorres; check the booking arrangements before your trip.
Hiking, Cycling and Via Ferratas
Cinctorres has seven easy hiking trails, ranging from 5.8 to 9.9 kilometres in length. One specifically named trail is the PR-CV 118 San CristĂłbal: it is 5.8 kilometres long and leads to the Ermita de San CristĂłbal, which offers panoramic views across the municipality. The GR 331 CamĂ de Conquesta is a 166-kilometre circular route through the Els Ports district, divided into 15 stages.
There is also a selection of cycling routes: the Cinctorres mountain-bike network includes signposted routes of varying difficulty. They mostly follow roads with little traffic and are usually unpaved. There are two via ferratas in the Rambla de Sellumbres gorge, one graded K2 and the other K6. The gorge is flanked by rock walls over 100 metres high. Check the technical requirements and access conditions before setting out.
Architectural History, Museums and Cuisine
The Palau de Sant Joans is an example of civil Gothic architecture associated with the nobility. Its origins date to the 15th century, while the surviving structure dates from the 17th century. The two dates therefore refer to different aspects of its architectural history. The Museo Parroquial offers another perspective on the town, with objects, relics, texts and historical items related to Cinctorres’s religious traditions. The Museo de la Faixa shows how the traditional sash is made, from the looms to the making of the cords.
Visits to the Museo de la Faixa, the church, the Ermita de Sant LluĂs and the Museo Parroquial begin at Tourist Info Cinctorres. Ask in advance about current opening times and arrangements. Traditional Cinctorres cuisine includes Ternasco lamb, ham, Cecina, Frito and Cuajada, as well as the sweets Las Coquetas and Almendrados. These dishes and specialities are another part of the town’s local character, alongside its buildings, collections and trails.
Sant Antoni in January
The Sant Antoni festival takes place every year on the last weekend of January; the exact date varies from year to year. Its customs include building and later burning a barraca. Horses also pull a holm oak through the streets of the town. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the official programme for the relevant year.
