Villahermosa del Río brings together trails along the Río Carbo, striking buildings and views of Penyagolosa. Visitors choosing the town as a destination can choose between hikes to waterfalls, gorges and viewpoints, and historical sites in the town and municipality. The varied routes and cultural sites give your stay different points of focus.

Río Carbo, Gorges and Hiking Trails

The Río Carbo lies at the foot of Penyagolosa, within the municipality of Villahermosa del Río. The Penyagolosa Natural Park also extends across the municipality. A circular hike passes through the Hoz del Río Carbo and starts at the recreation area where the Río Carbo flows into the Río Villahermosa. Birds nest on the rock faces along the route, which also provide refuge for Iberian ibex. The restored Roman-Gothic bridge provides access to the start of this route.

Another route description leads from Plaza de la Iglesia, by the tourist information office, through the town to the Río Carbo: the Cascada Río Carbo route. Along the way are an old mill, several waterfalls and pools such as Pozo Negro. This lets you combine the river landscape with a trail that starts in the town center. The Cascada la Tosca route, by contrast, starts at the foot of the Ermita San Antonio and leads to Paraje de la Tosca.

La Tosca is part of this natural area: a natural cave with a water source, stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is closed to protect its vegetation and formations; the area is classified as a protected natural area. The Barranco Magro route starts on the CV-175 and descends directly into the gorge. The geology there is shaped by the erosion of Triassic mountains, and the gorges consist mainly of limestone. The route is described as prone to flooding and slippery—take these conditions into account when choosing your route.

The Pino Cacho–San Bartolomé route starts at the end of Calle Hospital. After about 3.6 kilometers, it reaches Pino Cacho; the trail passes through pine and holm oak forests, where griffon vultures are often spotted. The Monte Altís route reaches the summit of Altís at 1,300 meters. Its natural viewpoints offer views of Penyagolosa; griffon vultures, golden eagles, Iberian ibex and wild boar can also often be spotted along the route.

The GR 7 also offers several points of orientation: the stage from Sant Joan de Penyagolosa to Villahermosa del Río is 11.9 kilometers long. GR-7 stage E31 is associated with the Penyagolosa protected areas designated as ZEPA and LIC. One description of this stage lists Villahermosa del Río as the starting point and the CV-196 at San Vicente de Piedrahita in Cortes de Arenoso as the finish. For a different type of activity, there are two via ferratas to choose from: La Muela is 140 meters long, climbs 100 meters in elevation and offers views of the rugged surroundings. La Mina combines a scenic, equipped via ferrata with a passage through an underground section of the former La Amorosa copper mine.

Churches, Art and History

In the town, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Natividad is designated a locally protected monument. Its Latin cross-shaped floor plan includes a central nave, two side aisles, a transept and a presbytery with an octagonal end. The parish church also contains Gothic altarpieces attributed to the Maestro de Villahermosa. This makes it possible to appreciate architecture and art together in a single building.

The Ermita San Antonio Abad is also designated a locally protected monument and dates from the Reconquista. Its wall paintings depict San Cristóbal and San Sebastián and are considered rare surviving examples of this type of mural painting in the region. The surviving El Tamborete tower is of Arab origin and belonged to fortifications from the early Reconquista. Those interested in the town’s history will find several clearly distinct examples of its architecture and art.

Visitor Information and Local Traditions

Tourist Info Villahermosa del Río provides tourist information, assistance and guidance for the municipality and the entire Comunitat Valenciana. To visit the Piscifactoría de Villahermosa del Río, you can contact the town hall or tourist information office in advance so that the facilities and their functions can be explained. You can fish in the facility’s lake for the brown trout raised there.

A recurring event in the annual calendar is the festival in honor of San Antonio Abad: it is held in January on the weekend closest to January 17. The celebrations include a large bonfire, the blessing of the animals, a procession and the distribution of handmade, blessed flatbreads. This tradition complements the hiking trails and cultural sites with a concrete glimpse of the town’s festive life.
