The Ruta de los Artistas takes approximately 45 minutes and passes several sights in Sant Jordi’s old town. It begins on Avenida José Soriano Ramos and ends at Fossar Vell. There you’ll find the sculpture “Cultura y Tradición”: made of steel, it depicts a woman in traditional dress performing the jota dance. The route provides a specific timeframe for a cultural walk; historic buildings, local traditions and the landscape are other key considerations when planning your trip.
History and Architecture
The Iglesia Medieval / Hostal is the oldest surviving building in Sant Jordi. Its earliest known mention dates to 1387. In 1825, the historic building was converted into an inn; it continued to operate as a hostal until the mid-20th century. Another important timeline concerns the Iglesia Parroquial de San Jaime: construction began in 1736 under the direction of Juan Barceló and was completed in 1759, including the bell tower.
The Iglesia Parroquial has a Baroque organ with 1,475 pipes. It was inaugurated in 1784, then destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, leaving it unusable. The Pous de Muntells rest stop also offers historical and architectural details: it dates from the 18th century and has stone washing places, four arches, a well and six stone basins. Casa de l’Americà, meanwhile, is a typical example of the so-called “Indian” style from the early 20th century. It was built by a young couple from Sant Jordi who had emigrated to Venezuela and inaugurated in 1913.
Local craftsmanship is another part of the townscape: the Taller Ferr family workshop has passed down artisanal knowledge and skills over the years and creates unique works.
Festivals, Traditions and Calvario
The patron saint festivities take place between April 23 and May 1. They include a procession and Mass in honor of Sant Jordi, a pilgrimage to the Real Santuario de la Virgen de la Font de la Salut de Traiguera, a sung Mass and a concert by the local brass band. The festivities also feature the traditional “Calderes d’Arròs,” prepared for residents and visitors. Music and activities for the whole family accompany the Mostra d’Oficis Tradicionals; it’s worth checking the dates for the relevant edition when planning your visit.
During Holy Week, Calvario is one of the three main locations for the “Vía Crucis” and “El Santo Entierro” processions. Calvario also has a small botanical garden with plants typical of the Mediterranean region. Here, religious traditions meet a distinctive botanical feature.
Ancient Olive Trees and Bovalar
Sant Jordi has more than 250 catalogued ancient olive trees. They are particularly concentrated in Els Muntells and Mas Na Cabanes. Most belong to the Farga variety, known for producing high-quality oil with a long shelf life. The trees therefore shape not only the landscape; the variety also offers a specific insight into local olive-growing traditions.
The municipal natural area Paraje Natural Municipal Bovalar de Sant Jordi covers 27.38 hectares and was designated a municipal natural area on June 23, 2006. From Bovalar, expansive views stretch from the Els Ports and Tinença mountains to the coast. The area also contains three historic lime kilns of ethnological interest. The ancient olive trees and Bovalar thus represent different aspects of the landscape and cultural heritage.
Planning Walks and Routes
Sant Jordi’s official hiking trails start at Plaça Major and are 8, 10.5, 14 and 18 kilometers long. Unlike the Ruta de los Artistas, for which an approximate duration of 45 minutes is given, distance is the point of reference here. As route details may depend on local trail maintenance, check trail conditions before setting out. A stage description published in 2025 covers 30.2 kilometers from Sant Jordi through La Jana to Traiguera.
Cyclists can use free facilities for washing and repairing bicycles: one is near the cemetery in the town center, and another is near the entrance to the Urbanización Panorámica Golf. The location and use details provide practical guidance for planning, without assuming a connection to the hiking trails mentioned above.
Golf Courses with Different Profiles
Panorámica Golf has an 18-hole, par-72 course designed by Bernhard Langer and open year-round. Lakes and centuries-old olive trees are among its features; the course is designed for players of all skill levels. Pitch & Putt Sant Jordi offers a different profile: its 18-hole par-3 course has holes measuring 60 to 110 meters and four large lakes. Par, course format and stated hole lengths provide specific points of comparison if you’re considering making golf a focus of your trip.
