Villar de Canes lies between Rambla Carbonera and Mount Matxorral. The surrounding area features almond groves and farmland. Hiking trails, church architecture, olive oil traditions and regional cuisine offer different ways to make the most of your stay. You can decide whether to devote more of your time to hiking, local history or culinary experiences.
Hiking: Circular Trail or Route to La Mina
The PR-CV 405 “Caminos del SeñorĂo de Vilar de Canes” starts at Plaza de la Setena in Villar de Canes and is a 10.00 km circular hiking trail. Its circular route distinguishes it from the municipal route to La Mina. This route runs from Villar de Canes to La Mina (La Torre D’en Besora) along the marked “Els Camins del Senyor” hiking trail.
It is uncertain whether the signage and maintenance of the PR-CV 405 are adequate for relying exclusively on the trail markers. Check conditions before setting out. For the municipal route, check the trail conditions and access on site.
Church, Village Views and Traces of the Landscape
The parish church of San Lorenzo was built in the 18th century to designs by Francisco Monfort, on the ruins of an earlier chapel. It is a hall church with three naves. Its construction period, predecessor building and architectural form offer different points of departure for exploring the village’s history.
The elevated Plaza del Vent offers views of traditional tiled roofs. Large stones hold the roof tiles in place against the mountain wind. The streets are lined with houses that have a traditional appearance. The remains of an old Muslim watchtower can also be seen on Mount Matxorral.
Festivals and the Olive Oil-Making Tradition
The patron saint festivities in honor of San Lorenzo take place each year during the first ten days of August. The program includes Vaquillas, the “Bou embolat” and public dances. The detailed program varies each year; if you plan your trip around the festivities, check the dates and events in advance. The festivities of San Antonio Abad include an animal blessing and the distribution of the traditional “Coqueta” to those present.
The Centro de InterpretaciĂłn del Aceite on Calle SacristĂa shows how oil was traditionally made in an old stone building. The Centre d’InterpretaciĂł de l’Oli is a restored old oil mill. Check current visiting options in advance.
Regional Cuisine and Time Outdoors
The classic olla, prepared in the style of the Alt Maestrat region, is considered a typical dish of Villar de Canes. Almond-based pastries are considered the village’s most representative confectionery. This gives you two different culinary experiences to explore: a regional dish and a sweet specialty.
The municipality has several natural springs in green, scenic areas that are suitable for relaxing outdoors. They add another nature-focused option to the hiking opportunities. Along with the almond groves and farmland, they offer a view of the surrounding area that contrasts with the church and village views.
