Montanejos offers a choice of rock landscapes, activities and culture: the Barranco de la Maimona is known for its mountain stream, tall reddish walls and narrow passages; Villa Purificación houses a permanent exhibition about the Mijares. There are also opportunities for climbing and rafting, as well as La Fuente de los Baños thermal spring. When planning, it is worth deciding first what you want to focus on: should the trip centre on rocks, the river, the thermal spring or culture?

Barranco de la Maimona: Rock and exploration

The Barranco de la Maimona is a mountain stream that flows into the Mijares near Montanejos. The section in Montanejos features reddish rock walls more than 60 metres high and narrow stretches that are, in places, less than five metres wide. Tall walls and narrow passages are two distinctive features of this landscape.

The Senda de la Bojera is a designated route for exploring the Barranco. If you plan to take it during your visit, check local access conditions before setting off. This makes the route a distinct option for exploring the gorge.

The Barranco has more than 400 sport climbing and multi-pitch routes. This number may change as climbing sectors are updated. Unlike the Senda de la Bojera, climbing is a separate activity focus: the route offers a way to explore the Barranco, while the climbing options include sport climbing and multi-pitch routes.

The Mijares, the thermal spring and rafting

Rafting on the Mijares takes you through the Estrecho de Chillapájaros canyon. This means that rafting is associated with the river and this canyon, while the Senda de la Bojera is associated with the Barranco de la Maimona. If you plan to go rafting, check the latest details of what is offered, as operational arrangements may change.

La Fuente de los Baños is the main attraction in the municipality of Montanejos and a thermal spring. This adds a different focus from the climbing and rafting options: the thermal spring itself. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between sporting activities and this separate attraction.

Villa Purificación: Architecture and exhibition

The former summer residence, Villa Purificación, is now a cultural space and home to Montanejos’s permanent museographic collection. Its permanent exhibition covers the river landscape and natural surroundings of the Mijares along its course through Montanejos. The cultural focus thus turns to the landscape and river, alongside the history of the building.

The building is Modernist. According to oral sources, the building plans and most of the architectural complex date from 1929. Villa Purificación has operated as an interpretation centre and been open to the public since 2019. Check its current public access status before your visit.

Planning your trip: what to focus on

The options differ in the kind of experience they offer: a designated route for exploring the Barranco, climbing, rafting on the Mijares or a cultural exhibition. This distinction can help you choose your own focus, rather than treating the options automatically as a set itinerary. The thermal spring is also a separate attraction alongside activities on the rocks and river.

First consider whether you are coming mainly for the rocks and climbing, rafting, the thermal spring or culture; then you can compare accommodation based on your own requirements.
