Cortes de Arenoso brings together medieval local history and rural crafts with a distinctive mountain and forest landscape. When planning your stay, you can consider cultural attractions, trails and the patron saint festivals in August as different highlights of your visit.
Gateways, architectural history and local traditions
The Calle Herrerías gateway is the main entrance to the former medieval settlement of Cortes de Arenoso, which was surrounded by a defensive wall. Another former entrance to the settlement is Rincón del Portal, with its covered wooden gateway. The “Caseríos del cerrito” ensemble is designated as a historic centre and an architectural complex of particular interest; its buildings are mostly made of dry stone. The Church of Our Lady of the Angels was completed in 1585.
The Museo Etnológico del Pan also offers a glimpse into the history of farming and breadmaking: it displays tools used to grow wheat and make bread. The museum is housed in a restored former communal Moorish oven. Both grain cultivation and breadmaking are therefore central to the museum.
The history of Cortes de Arenoso dates back to Iberian, Roman and Arab times; the town belonged to the Baronía de Arenós. A large archaeological area provides evidence of continuous settlement over two millennia. Excavations focused mainly on the settlement of Los Morrones. San Vicente de Piedrahita, which belongs to Cortes de Arenoso, was founded by the Arabs. Its name is linked to the tradition that San Vicente Ferrer preached in this area.
Mountain scenery and trails
Cabezo de las Cruces reaches 1,710 metres and is described as the second-highest mountain in the province of Castellón. Cortes de Arenoso also has one of the most significant formations of pine and Pyrenean oak trees in the Comunitat Valenciana. Another notable natural feature is El Rebollo, also known as El Abuelo: this Quercus faginea is considered the oldest of its kind in Spain and is over 700 years old.
Cortes de Arenoso has numerous trails and paths for hiking, running and cycling. The GR 7 E32 starts in San Vicente de Piedrahita. Its waypoints include San Vicente de Piedrahita, El Cerrito, La Artejuela and Montanejos. When planning your route, you can distinguish the named starting point from the other waypoints listed.
The Área recreativa de la Canaleta recreational area has barbecue facilities, a covered area, tables, chairs and waste bins. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check the condition of the facilities beforehand.
