Artana combines hiking routes with an old town whose history is reflected in narrow streets, religious ceramic panels and varied façades. The surrounding landscape and dishes that are part of the local cuisine add to its appeal. Visitors choosing this destination will find a range of highlights: routes of varying lengths and difficulty, traces of several historical periods, and a distinctive food culture.

The Landscape Around Artana

Artana is one of the municipalities in the Sierra de Espadán Natural Park. Les Penyes Aragoneses, also locally known as Penyes Altes, are five kilometres from the municipality. These large Ródeno rock formations are located in the heart of the Sierra Espadán. Their two names and location make them a clearly identifiable destination in the landscape around Artana, distinct from the town centre.

Another destination outside the town is the Ermita Santa Cristina. It lies two kilometres from Artana in a valley characterised by cypress, pine and olive trees, beside the Rambla. The hermitage was built in the 18th century in the Doric style and dedicated to Santa Cristina, Artana’s patron saint. Its location, vegetation and architectural history each offer a distinct point of interest.

Hiking Routes with Different Highlights

Artana has more than fifteen routes of varying difficulty, suitable for both mountain hikers and families. Two routes can be distinguished by their stated distances and destinations: Rebó y La Solana runs from the entrance to Artana to the Ermita Santa Cristina, passing by the La Solana spring. Its approximately seven kilometres are for the round trip, and the route is intended for hikers of all kinds.

Les Mines de la Font de Ferro is 9.22 kilometres long in total and includes three main openings of the iron mines. Iron was mined there more than fifty years ago. The route therefore combines a specific distance with the industrial history of the area around the town. The round-trip distance stated for Rebó y La Solana differs from the total distance of the mining route; the two destinations and their route descriptions are therefore just as important for comparison as the number of kilometres.

La Cova del Tronc offers views of La Plana. The first gallery can be traversed; beyond it, rope protection is required. This condition is part of the cave’s description and should be taken into account when considering this destination.

Old Town and Religious Heritage

The old town is considered the oldest part of the settlement. Its features include narrow streets of Muslim origin, numerous religious ceramic panels and Modernist and traditional façades. In the Pardinal neighbourhood, the oldest part of the town, a Via Crucis with its stations leads to the Ermita del Cristo del Calvario. The townscape thus brings together different forms of religious tradition and architectural design.

The Castillo de Artana is another historic landmark: its ruins are considered an Islamic fortress with Roman origins and medieval alterations. Artana’s parish church was built in the late 19th century on the site of an earlier temple. The original medieval mosque was very likely located there. The church also houses one of the notable paintings by the Castellón-born painter Bernardo Mondina Milallave: “Degollación de San Juan Bautista” (The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist), from 1862.

The parish museum offers another glimpse into the past. It houses a Muslim tombstone bearing the inscription: “This stone was erected by the brave Alí Zobei. God is Allah and Mohammed is his prophet.” The church, museum and castle convey different aspects of the local heritage: architecture, painting and a tangible testament to Muslim history.

Dishes from Artana

A typical dish from Artana is Cassoleta, made with potatoes, lamb, red peppers and pine nuts. Les orelletes are fried pastries made from eggs, anise, extra virgin olive oil and wheat flour; they are often served with honey. L’Olla de dijuni is a different kind of dish, prepared for the fasting period: it is made with field vegetables, including chard, as well as chickpeas. Together, the three dishes showcase the variety of ingredients and preparation methods in the local cuisine.
