Colmenarejo brings together cultural sites, an annual Romería and a designated network of routes. When choosing where to stay, you can first decide whether architecture and tradition or hiking and cycling trails should be your main focus. The Embalse de Valmayor is another point of interest in the landscape. You can also travel there by intercity bus route 631 from Madrid; check the timetable for your travel date.

Church architecture with two dates

The origins of the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol date back to the 16th century. Three naves, separated by round arches, make up the church. Its furnishings include the late Renaissance altarpiece, created in 1612. The two dates refer to different aspects: 1612 dates the altarpiece, not the origins of the church. This distinction separates the building’s history from a precisely dated work of art.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad offers a different architectural accent. Built in 1999, it is a simple granite structure with beautiful stained-glass windows and a slate roof. The chapel lies along the route to the Embalse de Valmayor and also has a role in local tradition.

Romería and mining history

The Romería de la Virgen de la Soledad takes place every year on the first Sunday in September. During the procession, the Virgen is carried from the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol to the Ermita, while the rosary is prayed. The church and the chapel are therefore not only two different buildings, but also the stops on this recurring annual tradition. If you would like to plan your trip around the Romería, take its September date into account when choosing your travel dates.

The Antigua Mina Pilar offers another perspective on the local heritage. Inside, there are turquoise and blue formations made of copper salts. The mine is considered the only surviving example of its kind in the Comunidad de Madrid. Alongside church architecture and religious tradition, mining heritage is therefore a distinct cultural focus.

Landscape and trails

Colmenarejo lies in the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Media del Río Guadarrama. The Embalse de Valmayor lies within the municipalities of El Escorial, Valdemorillo, Colmenarejo and Galapagar, covers 775 hectares and is also associated with the protected status of the Parque Regional del Curso Medio del río Guadarrama y su entorno. The reservoir is therefore a landscape feature that extends beyond Colmenarejo.

Colmenarejo has eight designated routes for hikers and cyclists. One of them is the Senda de Colmenarejo a San Blas (R12): it starts and ends at the Iglesia de Santiago Apóstol. The entire route is 7.1 kilometres long; the main route is listed as 5.6 kilometres. A branch leads to the San Blas area on the shore of the Embalse de Valmayor.

The Área Recreativa de la Ermita de Colmenarejo is also part of the R12 infrastructure. Trail conditions and facilities may change; check both before your excursion. This lets you take the route length, the branch to the reservoir shore and the listed facilities into account when planning, without assuming a particular combination.

Planning your journey and stay
