San Fernando de Henares combines urban heritage with archaeological discoveries and opportunities to enjoy nature in the Vega of the RĂo Henares. When planning your visit, it is worth treating the historic squares, tours requiring reservations and municipal hiking resources as separate experiences—they do not automatically form a single route.
Squares and City History
Plaza de España is square in shape. On one side stands the main façade of the former Real Fábrica de Paños, incorporated into the restored town hall building. Around the edge of the square are houses dating from the mid-18th century. Traces of the former cloth factory and homes from the same period therefore stand side by side in one place.
Plaza de Fernando VI is part of the old town center. At its center stands a statue that Queen Isabella II gave to the town in 1844 from the Palacio Real de Madrid. The square thus commemorates not only the monarch but also the statue’s origins in the Royal Palace.
Museum and Archaeological Site
The Museo de la Ciudad is located in buildings at Plaza de España No. 16 and Calle Coslada No. 13. These include an 18th-century residential building for workers at the Real Fábrica and a 19th-century granary. Both buildings are listed in the catalog of protected properties and are located in an area designated as a Conjunto HistĂłrico ArtĂstico, which today has the status of a Bien de InterĂ©s Cultural. The permanent museum presents the city’s historical and contemporary heritage through exhibitions, educational activities, research and publications.
The Camino de las Yeseras archaeological site reveals a different period in history. This important settlement from the Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age was inhabited for almost 3,000 years, between 4500 and 1700 BCE. The funerary symbolism of its individual and collective burials is also noteworthy. Its long timespan and varied burial practices make the site a distinct attraction alongside the more recent urban landscape.
With its four defensive towers, the Palacio de Aldovea recalls a medieval fortress. In the 18th century, the architect Virgilio Rabaglio converted it into a country retreat; today, the palace is privately owned.
Nature and Environmental Education
Finca CaserĂo de Henares covers 194 hectares in the Vega of the RĂo Henares. Activities on the grounds can introduce visitors to riverside woodland and practical farming. The CaserĂo de Henares Environmental Education Center is located in San Fernando de Henares, within a nature reserve area of the Parque Regional del Sureste. Guided trails through the reserve area of the grounds are available by prior reservation; educational trails also run along the banks of the RĂo Henares.
The permanent exhibition “Descubre CaserĂo” explains the different ecosystems found on the grounds. It uses natural objects collected there and information panels explaining the relationship between the environment and its inhabitants. Admission is free, and the exhibition is suitable for all visitor groups. The protected wetlands of Lagunas de Cerro Gordo are another natural area belonging to San Fernando de Henares and the Parque Regional del Sureste.
Green Trails and Local Festivals
Paseo de los Chopos is one of the town’s historic green trails and is used for exercise and enjoying nature. The municipal “Rutas Verdes” are available to download for hiking. Check the details of each route when choosing a hike. The Arco Verde environmental project is separate: it proposes a new walking and cycling route that would connect San Fernando de Henares with Mejorada del Campo and Torrejón de Ardoz through the Parque Regional del Sureste. Check the project’s status before including this planned connection in your itinerary.
The Fiestas Patronales include outdoor cultural activities, concerts, fairground attractions and food stalls. If you are planning to travel for the festival, check the announced dates. A traditional celebration for the feast day of Saint Blaise is associated with games, workshops and a competition at Paseo de los Chopos. Cultural events thus complement the area’s historical and natural attractions.
