Robledo de Chavela can be explored through two distinct themes: the parish church and its works of art, and the viewpoints together with an interpretive route through the mountainous landscape. The distinction is useful when planning your trip: for the network of viewpoints, access by car matters, while the Ruta interpretativa focuses on distance, elevation gain and difficulty.

Church Art at the Iglesia de la Asunción

The Iglesia parroquial de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is protected as a “Bien de Interés Cultural” in the “Monumento” category. Its vaults are decorated with murals forming a series of almost 80 dragon heads. The paintings may date from around 1500. The group of motifs and its approximate date provide a distinct art-historical point of interest.

Another work is the Hispano-Flemish altarpiece with influences from Toledo. It comprises 32 oil-painted panels, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, and can be dated to the late 15th or early 16th century. It is attributed to Antonio or Fernando del Rincón. The vault paintings and the altarpiece offer different points of interest: one features a series of recurring dragon motifs, while the other is a multi-part work with its own dedication and stylistic character.

Viewpoints and a Route of Its Own

Robledo de Chavela’s network of viewpoints can be explored by car. One exception is the Mirador del “Pinar de Robledillo”, which is reached on foot. If you plan to visit the viewpoints by car, take this different access route into account. Road conditions can vary, so it is advisable to check current conditions before setting out.

One specifically described hike is the Ruta interpretativa - El Mirador de Robledillo. It passes through the area around the Mirador de Robledillo and the Ermita de San Antonio de Padua. Along the way, you can observe the flora and fauna of the mountainous landscape. The route is 7.5 kilometres long, has an elevation gain of 200 metres and is rated easy to moderate. The distance, elevation gain and rating offer different points of reference for assessing the hike as part of your plans.

If you plan to take this route as part of an organised outing, check the latest details on dates and any possible registration requirements in advance. The arrangements for organised departures and registration requirements may change.

Landscape and Protected Area

Most of Robledo de Chavela lies within the “Cuencas y encinares de los ríos Alberche y Cofio” protected area. This area is almost entirely integrated into the Natura 2000 network. Its protected-area status gives the landscape a broader spatial dimension alongside the specific viewpoints and the route’s opportunities for observation. This lets you choose between the parish church’s works of art and the town’s landscape-related attractions.

Space Centre: Currently Closed

South of Robledo de Chavela is the INTA-NASA Training and Visitor Center. Its planned activities are designed to communicate science and cover NASA, Deep Space Network centres, space missions and general astronomy. The permanent exhibition includes an actual Moon rock from the Apollo XV mission.

The centre is currently closed to the public until further notice. Its exhibition topics therefore do not currently make it a public visitor attraction. Check its official status again before travelling, as it may change. For your plans, the parish church, the viewpoints and the interpretive route remain the cultural and landscape attractions described here.
