In Arganda del Rey, protected natural areas meet railway and architectural history, along with a long wine-making tradition. This mix offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore lagoons and seasonal birdwatching, discover historic sites, or focus on wine and olive tourism.

Nature Among Lagoons and Holm Oak Woodland

Part of the municipality lies within the Parque Regional del Sureste. Its landscape includes farmland, Mediterranean scrubland, replanted pine forests and valley wetlands, home to protected animal and plant species. Dehesa El Carrascal covers 131 hectares and is considered the last remaining remnant of a Castilian-Manchegan holm oak forest.

Las Lagunas de Las Madres is a natural area in the Parque Regional del Sureste, on the former Las Madres estate. An ecological trail runs around the first two lagoons; information panels and stopping points highlight notable plants. From designated observation points, you can watch migratory birds such as black kites, purple herons and cattle egrets, depending on the season. The nature reserve also offers boat trips.

Architectural History and Sacred Sites

Casa del Rey was built in 1594 as a country retreat for Hans Kevenhuller, the German ambassador to the Spanish court at the time. Following its restoration and adaptation, it is now one of the municipality’s cultural centres. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Juan Bautista was built between 1690 and 1714. Its Cristo Chapel contains the tombstone of the maternal family of Miguel de Cervantes, who came from Arganda.

Several hermitages also offer their own historical perspectives. The remains of the 13th-century Ermita de Valtierra are considered one of the few examples of Mudéjar architecture in the Comunidad de Madrid. The Ermita de San Roque was built as a civic votive offering after the 1600 plague epidemic and is considered an example of popular devotion. The Ermita de la Soledad is a 17th-century Baroque religious building with historical ties to the Jesuits. Its furnishings include an original statue of the Virgen de la Soledad, made by José Ginés in 1810.

Railways, Technology and Modern History

The Museo del Tren at La Poveda station preserves a range of railway heritage installations: a water tank with a water crane, the controls for an old railway switch, level-crossing barriers, a coal bunker, and a signal box. These details give the railway heritage a technical focus that sets it apart from the town’s architectural and religious history.

The Arganda optical telegraph tower operated from 1849 to 1856 and is considered one of the most important towers of its kind in Spain. During guided visits, experts explain how it worked. The fortifications on Cerro del Melero offer another technical and historical perspective: after the Battle of Jarama, they formed part of the Republican Army’s second line of defence. The remains include trenches, shelters, air-raid shelters, a machine-gun post, rifle pits and an observation post.

The municipal tourism programme also includes guided walks through places connected with the Battle of Jarama. Expert commentary covers the conflict and its visible remains. For a different view of the landscape, a 14,808-metre stretch of the Vía Verde del Tajuña runs south from the urban area to the municipality of Morata de Tajuña.

Wine and Olive Tourism

Wine from Arganda is recognised under the Denominación de Origen “Vinos de Madrid”. The town’s wine-making tradition is linked to evidence of grape cultivation in the Jarama Valley dating back to the 3rd century AD. A route at the Museo del Vino offers an introduction to this wine-making heritage.

Arganda also offers wine and olive oil tourism visits to local olive groves and vineyards. Producers explain how olives and grapes are harvested and processed into oil and wine. This brings the agricultural processes behind both products into focus alongside cultural and natural attractions.
