A panoramic view of the ravines and rocky peaks of Las Médulas defines a visit to Orellán. The Mirador de Orellán is in the village; the Galería de Orellán is also accessible from there. There are also routes with different points of reference and a Roman settlement site. This gives you a choice of different focuses: the landscape, a visit to the gallery, or archaeological history.

Viewpoint and gallery: views and the route to the balcony

The Mirador de Orellán offers a panoramic view of the ravines and rocky peaks of Las Médulas. It can be reached from Orellán via a road that is easy to drive. Access on foot is from a large car park at the start of the climb; the entrances to the viewpoints are clearly signposted. You can therefore plan the drive and the walk as separate steps when finding your way around.

The Galería de Orellán is accessible from the viewpoint. The route through the gallery is about 100 metres long and leads to a balcony in a vertical cleft in the mountain. A visit to the gallery therefore offers a different focus from the open panoramic view: here, the route leads to a clearly identified destination inside the mountain. An admission ticket must be purchased in advance for the visit; include this step in your plans.

Choose routes by their points of reference

When choosing a route, it is worth looking at its points of reference. The Senda Perimetral lies within the Las Médulas Natural Monument. The endpoints of the Senda de los Conventos are specified: it runs from Mirador de Orellán - La Frisga to Orellán. The Ruta de Los Poblados includes a visit to the Asentamiento metalúrgico de Orellán. This allows you to choose whether to orient yourself by the Natural Monument, a route with named starting and finishing points, or an archaeological site included as part of the route.

Roman settlement and UNESCO World Heritage

The Asentamiento metalúrgico de Orellán was founded under Roman rule. It was inhabited by Indigenous people who worked in the mining facilities. The settlement site is associated with mining, metallurgy and agricultural production in Las Médulas. Together, these connections tell more than the story of its founding alone: they also place the settlement within a history of work and production.

The Mirador de Orellán and the Galería de Orellán are part of Las Médulas, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The year refers to this World Heritage designation; Roman rule, by contrast, marks the context in which the Asentamiento was founded. This makes it possible to distinguish chronologically between the history of the settlement site and the World Heritage status of Las Médulas.
