Steep cuts in the mountain slopes and extensive spoil heaps reveal the traces of Roman hydraulic gold mining at Las Médulas. Viewpoints and trails offer different perspectives on this landscape, from the visible mining features to the canals and ponds associated with its mining history.
Mining and Water Management at a Glance
The archaeological zone of Las Médulas covers more than 2,000 hectares. It includes mines, spoil heaps, dams and hydraulic canals. The central open-pit mine covers more than 10 square kilometres. The canal and pipeline system was also extensive, stretching at least 100 kilometres. These figures show how the different features of the landscape are connected, without reducing the mines to their visible cuts.
The Mirador de Reirigo offers the most comprehensive view of Roman mining. Visible features include the well-known reddish cuts, spoil heaps and channels for draining the spoil, as well as ponds formed from them, such as Lago Sumido. The viewpoint thus brings together several features of the landscape that can be found throughout the archaeological zone.
Choosing Trails and Viewpoints
The Senda de Las Valiñas is a circular trail starting from the village of Las Médulas, which you can explore on foot or by bicycle. From the village, you can also join the Senda de Reirigo via this trail. If you are planning a trip, check trail conditions before setting out. This will help you choose trails based on their stated destinations and your preferred way of getting around, without assuming a specific walking or cycling time.
Another hiking destination is the Mirador de Chaos de Maseiros. A trail with a low difficulty level leads there from the village, passing the Senda al Lago Somido along the way. For a cycling route, there is also the moderately difficult Ruta cicloturista – Monumento Natural de Las Médulas, which is 17.7 kilometres long. This distance and difficulty rating provide a specific point of reference when planning a cycling trip.
Natural Monument and Lago de Carucedo
Las Médulas is designated a Natural Monument. Its Mediterranean vegetation includes holm oaks, cork oaks, strawberry trees, oaks and, above all, chestnut trees. Lago de Carucedo adds an aspect of bird conservation to the themes of mining and landscape: because of its importance to waterbirds, it plays a significant role in bird conservation at Las Médulas.
You can go kayaking on Lago de Carucedo; rental facilities for suitable equipment are available near the lake. Since the availability of activities and equipment can change, it is best to check before planning a kayaking trip. This lets you consider the water activity as a separate option alongside the trails and viewpoints.
Roman Traces at Lago de Carucedo
The Domus Romana de Pedreiras de Lago stands on the shore of Lago de Carucedo. It is part of the Las Médulas cultural area, but is not located in the village of Las Médulas. The Domus was probably the central administrative and organisational building for the Roman gold mines. This possible function offers a different perspective on mining from the visible cuts and spoil heaps.
A 1.50-metre-wide path made of concrete slabs provides access around the site. A footbridge crosses the remains to a small pavilion that protects a room with remnants of wall paintings. Check current access options before visiting, so the description of the site is not mistaken for a promise about current opening hours.
Practical Information Before Your Visit
The Casa del Parque de Las Médulas provides an overview of the Natural Monument, information about visiting options and areas of interest, as well as audiovisual resources and materials to help you plan your visit. If you plan to use it as a guide, check in advance which services are currently available.
The route to Cuevona can also be assessed based on its surface: it begins on a paved stretch, followed by a 100-metre downhill section of compacted earth. Conditions may change after maintenance work or weather events. Check the route before your visit and take both sections into account when planning.
