The Senda del Arcediano is documented as early as 973 under the name “vía de Sajambre.” In Oseja de Sajambre, this history of the trail, historic buildings, and traditional architecture meet mountain views and circular routes. Each destination offers its own focus for exploring the village and its surroundings.

The Senda del Arcediano and its history

The Senda del Arcediano crosses the entire Sajambre Valley. Its section between Oseja and Soto de Sajambre is 4,895 meters long. This distance refers to that section; crossing the valley describes the course of the entire Senda. The trail was already documented in 973 as the “vía de Sajambre.”

Shortly after leaving Oseja on the Senda toward Pontón, you’ll find a recreation area with tables and children’s play equipment. It offers a convenient place to take a break along this route. This makes it possible to combine the trail’s history with a practical stop, without confusing the route’s distance with the crossing of the entire valley.

Churches and the history of Oseja’s buildings

The Ermita de San Roque is a notable landmark for local history and trails: the PR-PNPE 10 begins there, above Oseja. The chapel was built around the beginning of the 16th century and rebuilt in 1703 at the expense of Oseja’s residents. Its history thus includes two distinct phases of construction.

Santa MarĂa de Oseja was originally a privately endowed church owned by the Counts of Flainez. The Casa del Conde, a manor house that is now in ruins, is also located in the Las Cortes district. Traditional buildings featured on an interpreted tour of Oseja also include hĂłrreos (raised granaries), washhouses, and traditional houses.

Circular routes and insights into Sajambre culture

The PR-PNPE 10 circular route, “Ruta pueblos de Sajambre,” is 10.2 kilometers long. It begins above Oseja at the Ermita de San Roque, follows the Senda del Arcediano toward Soto, and continues to Ribota de Arriba and Ribota de Abajo. From there, a path runs alongside the River Sella before the route returns to Oseja.

The route explores Sajambre’s traditional stone-and-wood architecture. Points of interest along the way include churches and washhouses in Oseja and Ribota, the schools of Soto de Sajambre, and the River Sella. In this way, the circular route links several places and examples of regional architectural heritage.

For a circular walk focused more closely on Oseja, interpreted tours cover 2 kilometers, with stops at hĂłrreos, washhouses, and traditional houses. This shorter walk offers a different focus from the 10.2-kilometer PR-PNPE 10: here, the stops in the village take center stage, while the longer route passes through several villages and their surroundings. Tour dates and availability depend on the season; check both before your trip.

The “Sajambre tradicional” route passes through Oseja and its surroundings. It brings traditional architecture and residents’ way of life to life and includes a visit to the ethnographic collection “La Memoria de Sajambre,” housed in a traditional house. Dates and availability for this activity are also seasonal; check the dates on offer before your trip.

Mountain views around the valley

Pico PozĂşa, also known as Jian, is a 1,923-meter peak in the Cantabrian Mountains. The described ascent from the La Petanera bend has an elevation gain of about 700 meters. The climb reaches a meadow with wide-ranging views north toward Los Beyos and east toward the western and central massifs of the Picos de Europa.

Pico Jairo offers panoramic views across the entire Sajambre Valley, the Cordal del Colláu Zorru, Peña Beza, Canto Cabronero, and the southern slopes of the western and central massifs of the Picos de Europa. Peña Beza lies north of Soto de Sajambre, rises above the valley, and offers a good view of the Picos de Europa. These peaks therefore provide different views of the valley, mountain ranges, and the Picos.

Oseja in Picos de Europa National Park

Along with Posada de ValdeĂłn, Oseja de Sajambre is one of the two municipalities in Castile and LeĂłn that lie within Picos de Europa National Park. This regional context complements the specific village and route themes: options include historic trail sections, architectural history, interpreted walks, and mountain views, each with its own focus.
