If you would like to combine textile crafts and architectural history, Val De San Lorenzo offers two clear areas of focus. Its wool-making traditions come to life through tools, looms and production processes; churches, a hermitage and traditional buildings complete the picture. This allows you to plan your stay around specific cultural interests rather than scheduling several similar sights.

Wool Craft and Textile History

Linen and wool have been woven in Val De San Lorenzo for a long time. La Comunal marks an important chapter in this history: in 1920, 73 residents founded a cooperative and, with modern machinery, established the town’s first factory for carding and spinning wool. Its founding brings together local initiative and a concrete insight into how the material is processed.

The Batán-Museo also brings a single stage of the work to life. Among other things, you can see teasels used to raise the nap on blankets. The Batán Museo combines the exhibition with textile crafts: textile artisans still work there, although this activity may vary. La Comunal shows the traditional production process for blankets and other textile products and preserves historic looms that are still in working order. If you plan to visit, check the latest opening and operating details in advance.

The sites offer different points of focus: the Batán-Museo highlights the tools used to raise the nap, while La Comunal covers the production process and the looms. A walk around Val De San Lorenzo can also take in textile factories, workshops, craft shops and handlooms that are still in use. This makes it possible to discover the weaving tradition not only through individual exhibits, but also through the different stops on a tour of this craft-oriented town.

Churches and Architectural History

The Iglesia Parroquial dates from the 16th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and its apse has three sections. Inside, the furnishings include a main altarpiece dating from 1689, above which sits the 13th-century Virgen de la Carballeda. The church thus brings together 16th-century architecture and two precisely dated features of its furnishings.

The Ermita de San Antonio was built in 1719. Its tower and clock were added in 1896. The clock mechanism was made by Antonio Canseco, a Maragato from Rabanal del Camino. Those interested in architectural history can compare these dates with those of the older parish church: the two religious buildings lead to different periods in the town’s history, without implying a single, uniform architectural style.

Townscape, Routes and Festivals

The townscape includes traditional farmhouses and muleteers’ houses, as well as fountains, dovecotes and mills. These features broaden the view beyond churches and textile history to encompass different aspects of the town’s built heritage and everyday life. Along with the workshops and handlooms, they offer several themes to explore during a stay, which you can prioritize according to your interests.

The Camino Gallego also features in historical accounts: the 1752 inventory describes it as a royal road, while Madoz described it in 1848 as a route from Benavente to Galicia. The Fiestas in honour of the Virgen de la Carballeda have been recognized as a festival of provincial tourist interest; a municipal calendar entry from 2023 lists this designation.

Another Activity in Town

Parque Doctor Pedro Alonso has its own Bolos Maragatos bowling lane. Games take place on weekends between May and October; as dates may change, it is worth checking the schedule before your trip. The park adds a seasonal activity to the cultural stops. When planning, you can therefore choose between different areas of focus: textile crafts, architectural history or games in the park.
