Located on the banks of the Río Curueño and in the Vega, La Candana De Curueño combines a river landscape with local cultural heritage. The parish church, two heraldic depictions of the Dama de Arintero and a story associated with her give the place a range of cultural points of interest. The Ruta de La Pluma also passes through La Cándana: the circular route crosses the municipality’s four settlements. You can choose between landscape, history and a route with several stops.

River and mountains around La Cándana

La Cándana is the first village along the Río Curueño. Over the 18-kilometre stretch from there to its confluence with the Porma, the river becomes calmer and gentler. The connection with the river therefore encompasses both the banks by the village and a longer stretch towards the Porma. La Cota and Casabe offer a different landscape: their mountains are rich in oak and pine trees and separate La Cándana from Campohermoso. The river and mountain ranges help place the village in the Vega without confusing the two types of landscape.

Church, tombstones and heraldic depictions

The parish church of La Cándana is part of the local cultural heritage. Its porch contains several tombstones, which were removed from their original position by the altar many years ago. At that time, the space by the altar was reserved exclusively for noble families. The tombstones’ current location in the porch is therefore linked to their former, socially restricted position by the altar. Inside the church, there is also an impressive polychrome wooden carving of Santa Lucía.

The village also has two finely crafted heraldic depictions of the Dama de Arintero. They offer a different way of exploring the local cultural heritage from the tombstones and the wooden carving: their subject connects heraldic art with a figure who features in a story from La Cándana. Visitors interested in local cultural references will find not only individual works, but also a tradition associated with a specific person.

The story of the Dama de Arintero

The story associated with La Cándana tells of a brave mountain woman who disguised herself as a man to protect her elderly father from military service to the king. The story thus links a family motive with the historical subject of military service. Together with the heraldic depictions, it provides a cultural point of interest that encompasses both a specific image and the story connected to it. The tradition can therefore be considered a distinct focus alongside the landscape and the details of the parish church.

Circular route and local festival dates

The Ruta de La Pluma is a circular route through the municipality’s four settlements, passing through La Cándana along the way. This sets it apart from the local cultural features: the route takes in several settlements, while the church, tombstones and wooden carving are specific points of interest in La Cándana. Details such as walking time, difficulty or access are not included among the route information described here.

A local festival in honour of Santa Lucía is associated with 12 August. The Fiesta del Veraneante takes place around the last week of July and the first week of August; bollo preñado and Sidra are part of the celebrations. If you would like to plan your trip around either festival, check the specific event dates in advance. This will help you factor the festival information into your plans without conflating it with the village’s landscape or cultural highlights.
