The Hoces de Vegacervera are a gorge carved into Mesozoic limestone by the River TorĂo. It is nearly 500 metres deep, but no more than 15 metres wide at its base. Depth and width at the base describe different measurements: the figure for the narrow base is not the width of the entire gorge.

Gorge, River and Forests

The Hoces lie along the middle course of the Torío, within the municipalities of Vegacervera and Cármenes. They are designated as a protected natural area. This designation is based on Decree 94/2004 of 26 August, published on 1 September in the B.O.C.y L.

The vegetation also varies between the slopes and the valley floor. Oak and beech forests grow on the slopes, while the valley floor is home to a riparian forest of willows and poplars. Both the woodland on the slopes and the riparian forest are part of the Hoces’ natural landscape, but the two areas cannot be grouped together as a single forest type.

Cave Visits and Climbing

The Cueva de Valporquero is 3,498 metres long. The tourist visit covers seven named chambers and galleries and takes place in groups accompanied by a cave guide. If you are planning this visit, check the current arrangements before travelling.

The Curso de Aguas de Valporquero is a different experience: access allows for a caving traverse through galleries and waterfalls that have not been artificially developed for visitors. Availability and requirements may change, so check them before making plans. The two cave experiences therefore differ both in format and in the stated conditions for visiting.

In the Hoces de Vegacervera, climbing routes range from climbs suitable for beginners to technically demanding lines. This range is a helpful starting point for choosing a route; what matters is whether a particular route suits your own climbing ability.

Fiesta de la Cecina de Chivo

Vegacervera hosts the Fiesta de la Cecina de Chivo every year. In 2023, the event was recognised as being of provincial tourist interest. At the festival, visitors can buy Cecina de Chivo and sample goat soup, preñaos with goat sausage, spirits, pastries and wine. The Fiesta is therefore not just an event date, but also an occasion where regional dishes are expressly part of the programme. Dates and offerings may vary; check the specific festival dates and dishes if you are planning your trip around them.

Getting There and Access to the Beech Forest

The road journey from LeĂłn to the Cueva de Valporquero follows the LE-311 to Matallana de TorĂo, then the LE-315 to FelmĂn, and finally a local road to the cave car park. Check current road conditions before setting out. The car park at the entrance to the Cueva de Valporquero is the best starting point for accessing the Hayedo de Valporquero. Seasonal conditions may affect the walk, so take this into account when planning.
