La Revilla brings together sacred art, archaeological traces and distinctive landscapes. The parish church of Nuestra SeƱora de la Vega houses a Madonna dating from the first third of the 14th century; fragments of Roman stelae are built into the walls of the Ermita de Nuestra SeƱora del Amparo. There is also the Camino de la Ermita and views across several comarcas. When planning a trip, you can choose between heritage, religious celebrations and the landscape as different points of focus.

Getting There and the Route to the Ermita

The road to La Revilla and Ahedo branches off the N-234 Burgos–Sagunto. The turnoff is four kilometres from Salas de los Infantes, in the direction of Burgos. It provides a clear landmark for reaching both villages.

The Camino de la Ermita connects the centre of La Revilla with the Ermita de Nuestra SeƱora del Amparo and is 1,880 metres long. Most of the route passes through farmland. When planning your journey, be sure to distinguish between the distances given: the four kilometres refer to the turnoff and Salas de los Infantes, while the 1,880 metres refer to the route between the village centre and the Ermita.

Church and Historical Traces

The parish church of Nuestra SeƱora de la Vega follows the classic serraniano style, with simple, robust forms and notable architectural features. Its architecture and religious art offer two distinct ways to explore the village’s heritage. The church houses a polychrome seated Madonna and Child, Nuestra SeƱora del Amparo. The wooden sculpture dates from the first third of the 14th century and came from the Ermita de Nuestra SeƱora del Amparo. Its provenance links the two sacred sites through this work of art.

The walls of the Ermita contain several fragments of Roman stelae, including an inscribed fragment from the 1st century AD. In chronological terms, these Roman traces predate the 14th-century Madonna by a considerable margin. This makes it possible to distinguish two different historical periods: Roman times and medieval sacred art.

The Plaza Mayor is also home to the restored historic potro, another cultural landmark outside the sacred buildings.

Landscape and Excursions

La Revilla and Ahedo lie on the slopes of PeƱa de Villanueva. From the settlement, views stretch across the comarcas of Lara, Demanda and Pinares, with especially far-reaching views from Ahedo. For a view over the valley, PeƱa de San Carlos is named as a natural viewpoint above the Arlanza Valley. Ahedo is considered a starting point for the ascent of PeƱa de Carazo. This offers two distinct ways to enjoy the landscape: a valley panorama and a climb.

Pilgrimage and Festival Calendar

The devotion to the Virgen del Amparo is shared by La Revilla, Ahedo and Barbadillo del Mercado. The pilgrimage to the Virgen del Amparo is held on the first weekend of September; the festival in honour of Our Lady of Vega takes place on the last weekend of August. Check the dates for the relevant year before travelling if you would like to plan your stay around a festival.
