Villarcayo lies on the banks of the Nela River and combines its connection to nature with a distinct historical character. The entire town has been designated a “Conjunto Histórico” (Historic Site); other highlights include sacred art, the El Soto park complex and events held at different times of year. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether the river, cultural heritage or a specific event date will be the deciding factor.

By the Nela: Nature and Outdoor Activities

El Soto also lies on the banks of the Nela and encompasses a large natural area with bathing areas. If you plan to visit them, check the latest conditions beforehand, as the rules for their use may vary. This lets you plan your time by the river around a specific question: whether and when you would like to use the bathing areas.

Villarcayo offers a municipal public bicycle-sharing service. As availability may change, check before your trip whether the service will be available on your dates. Another cycling option is the BTT Sendas de Castilla la Vieja route, which starts in Villarcayo’s extensive, leafy El Soto park. Route conditions may also change, so check them before planning your ride.

For walks, there is the Red de Senderos de Pequeño Recorrido de Villarcayo (Villarcayo Short-Distance Trail Network, PRC). The network comprises seven circular trails, approved by the Federación de Montaña, Escalada y Senderismo de Castilla y León. The number of trails and their circular layout give you a clear overview of what is on offer; check the latest route information before setting out, as details may change.

Townscape and Sacred Art

On June 19, 2007, the entire town of Villarcayo was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest) in the “Conjunto Histórico” category. The Casa Consistorial, or town hall, stands in the Plaza Mayor and was built in 1891. Together, the Plaza Mayor and town hall form a rural urban ensemble typical of northern Castile. The Torre del Reloj dates from the 16th century, providing an earlier historical reference point alongside the 19th-century town hall.

An acclaimed museum of sacred art adds another cultural focus to the historic buildings. When choosing what to explore, you can distinguish between the history of the townscape and sacred art, rather than combining them into a single sightseeing interest.

Events and Market Dates

Specific dates may also influence your travel plans. The Junta de Castilla y León has recognized La Guinda as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Regional (Regional Tourist Interest Festival). The Fiesta de la Guinda y Santa Marina takes place on the evening of July 17 in Villarcayo. In August, the Fiestas de San Roque, patron saint celebrations in honor of Our Lady and Saint Roch, are held on the 15th and 16th. The Concurso Nacional de Saltos is also held in the last week of August. Annual event programs may vary, so check the exact dates before your trip.

Villarcayo has held the privilege of hosting a weekly market every Monday since 1571. If the market is important to your stay, check before traveling whether it will be held as scheduled. The Concurso de Pucheras also takes place in December. These dates can help you choose a general travel period, but they are no substitute for checking the program or market day in question.

Plan Your Stay Around What Matters to You

If an event date is the deciding factor, check the specific program before booking. That way, your plans start with what you would like to experience in Villarcayo, without assuming a fixed itinerary.
