Hontoria del Pinar combines nature trails in the Parque Natural del Cañón del Río Lobos with striking traces of local history. When planning, it is worth considering the route and distance: there are circular trails, a linear river route and a stage that starts in the town centre. The Fiesta del Mayo also has a fixed date in the annual calendar.
Cañón del Río Lobos and its landscape
The Parque Natural del Cañón del Río Lobos is a limestone canyon more than 25 kilometres long. River erosion shaped this landscape; cliffs with height differences of more than 100 metres line the edges of the canyon. Along its route, the PRC-BU-05 Senda de Hontoria offers impressions of the natural park’s flora, fauna, geology and landscape.
The natural park extends across the municipality of Hontoria del Pinar in Burgos and several municipalities in Soria: San Leonardo de Yagüe, Casarejos, Santa María de las Hoyas, Herrera de Soria, Nafría de Ucero and Ucero. The protected landscape therefore extends beyond a single province. The PRC-BU-05 runs entirely within the park and starts and ends in the municipality of Hontoria del Pinar.
Circular trails, river route and stage
If you are looking for a circular trail, you can compare two routes of different lengths. The PRC-BU-05 Senda de Hontoria is 10.87 kilometres long and starts and ends in Hontoria del Pinar. The Senda Espeleológica de Hontoria del Pinar is also a circular route, covering 8.81 kilometres before returning to its starting point. Its focus is on caves and shafts in the Burgos section of the natural park. Trail conditions can change seasonally.
The PR-SO-BU-65 Senda del Río takes a different route: the 25-kilometre trail follows the Río Lobos through the natural park, crossing the river several times, and ends in Hontoria del Pinar next to the Puente romano. After heavy rain, the crossings may be difficult or impossible; check conditions before setting out. The circular trail and linear route therefore differ both in their course and significantly in length.
Another option is the Hontoria del Pinar–San Leonardo de Yagüe stage of the Camino Natural Santander–Mediterráneo. It starts in the town centre, is just over nine kilometres long and connects the provinces of Burgos and Soria. There is a rest area along the stage before the entrance to the natural park. Griffon vultures fly among the cliffs there and nest in them. This stage therefore offers a different route from the circular trails and the river route.
Bridge and historical traces
The Puente romano de Hontoria del Pinar spans the Río Lobos. The Roman road linking Clunia and Uxama ran across its site. The bridge is therefore a tangible point of reference for the history of transport routes in the area.
The settlement of Hontoria del Pinar as it is known today was established in the 9th to 10th century in connection with the Reconquista and resettlement. In the 18th century, the town enjoyed a significant economic boom as a member of the Real Cabaña de Carreteros. The former resin distillation factory in Navas del Pinar is also part of its industrial heritage. The former railway station buildings in Hontoria del Pinar have also been preserved, with the exception of the warehouse.
Fiesta del Mayo on 1 May
The Fiesta del Mayo is celebrated every year on 1 May in Hontoria del Pinar and is classified as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Castilla y León. After the maypole is erected, girls perform dances around it. The tradition also includes a communal meal of the young men taking part, featuring the traditional caldereta serrana.
The festival date offers a clear cultural point of reference for planning a trip, alongside the nature trails and historic buildings. When choosing Hontoria, you can first decide whether to focus on the circular trails, the course of the Río Lobos, the town’s history or the annual festival.
