Villanueva de la Vera can be explored through two distinct highlights: the town’s historic architecture and the water landscapes along the Garganta de Gualtaminos. The Peropalo and local cuisine also stand out as cultural and culinary topics in their own right. For planning, it helps to distinguish between them: streets, squares and buildings tell the story of construction methods and everyday life in the past, while trails and water spots reveal another side of the town.

Historic Streets and Architecture

In 1982, Villanueva de la Vera was declared a Conjunto HistĂłrico-ArtĂstico (Historic-Artistic Site). Its historic streets are narrow, shady and sheltered from the rain. Traditional water channels carry water to the orchards lower down. The construction methods are also characteristic: the upper floors feature timber framing, while the ground floors are built of natural stone or dressed stone. This design helps insulate the houses from ground moisture.

Around the Plaza Mayor are three-storey houses with wooden balconies. The arcades of the Plaza Mayor, also known as the Plaza de Aniceto Marinas, once served as a marketplace. The Iglesia de la ConcepciĂłn is currently designated a Monument of Cultural Interest. It was originally built to accommodate worshippers from four nearby villages. The building has three aisles of unequal size; the altar fronts on either side of the transept are made of 16th-century Talavera tiles.

Festival Traditions and Local History

Since 1965, the Peropalo has held the status of a festival of regional tourist interest and is considered a traditional celebration featuring elements of rural carnival customs. The Centro de interpretaciĂłn del Peropalo introduces visitors to the festival, partocha culture, local traditions, and life and customs in Villanueva de la Vera.

Smaller historical details also offer insight into everyday life in the past. The Ermita de San AntĂłn once provided shelter for travellers and pilgrims on their way to the Sierra de Gredos. After a fire destroyed its roof, the chapel was moved to a new location in 1760. There used to be a small fountain below the El Chorrillo fountain, which served as a washing place.

Water Landscapes and Trails

The Cascada del Diablo is located in the Garganta de Gualtaminos, one kilometre from the edge of Villanueva de la Vera in the direction of Madrigal. It drops 70 metres over a short distance, and an easy path leads to a viewpoint. The waterfall is one of the 20 water landscapes of Extremadura. The Garganta de Gualtaminos flows into the Tiétar and is part of the Tagus drainage basin.

The El Librito pool in the Garganta changes considerably with the seasons: in winter, the watercourse overflows its banks, while in summer, rock formations, paths, channels and pools become visible again. Conditions at the waterfall can vary seasonally, so it is worth checking the current situation before your visit.

The Ruta de los Prados is a three-kilometre circular trail of low difficulty that you can explore on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike (BTT). It passes through oak forests to a natural viewpoint overlooking Villanueva, the Tiétar Valley, the Rosarito Reservoir and the Montes de Toledo. Weather and vegetation affect the view. As conditions and signage may change, check both before setting out.

The Ruta Riolobos offers a different focus: it passes cork oaks, oaks, pines, hackberry trees, strawberry trees, junipers and heather; the area’s diverse birdlife uses these places for shelter. The trail to the Puente de la Ombrigüela crosses a shady riverside forest to the Piscina Natural de Villanueva de la Vera. At Parque del Corchito, you can refill bottles with spring water or freshen up.

Regional Cuisine

Villanueva de la Vera is part of the protected production area for Pimentón de la Vera. In Villanueva, you can find homemade dishes featuring Pimentón and Verata goat’s cheese among their characteristic ingredients. Both products are considered entirely artisan-made.
