In Montehermoso, historic architecture and vibrant craft traditions meet trails through a dehesa landscape. This makes the town an appealing place to stay if you want to focus on both culture and nature: you can explore regional costumes and traditional techniques, or set aside time for walks and a hiking stage.

Church and Everyday Culture

The building history of the parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de Ntra. Sra. de la AsunciĂłn, dates back to the mid-16th century, and it is listed in Extremadura as an asset of particular cultural interest. Its main altarpiece also has its own historical date: it was created between 1640 and 1650. The church therefore offers a glimpse into several periods of local architectural and artistic history, rather than representing just a single point in time.

At the Museo Etnográfico de Montehermoso, which opened in 2003, the focus is on local crafts and objects from everyday life. Exhibits include agricultural tools, as well as old kitchens, beds and clothing. The collection also includes traditional costumes from Montehermoso and the clothing worn by the Negritos de San Blas. These objects provide a tangible connection to the town’s history.

You can encounter crafts beyond the museum collection, too: workshops in Montehermoso still make cencerros, traditional livestock or herd bells produced using time-honoured methods. Straw hats are another local craft tradition. Their braid is made from seven strands of straw and measures 12 to 14 metres; the handmade hats are decorated with materials including wool, mother-of-pearl buttons, felt and sequins. The church bells made in Montehermoso are also known as Campanas de Rivera.

Walks and Hiking

By Decree 245/2014 of 18 November, the Dehesa Boyal de Montehermoso was declared a peri-urban park for nature conservation and recreation. Walks along paths and trails take you through a landscape of holm oaks, cork oaks, rockroses and broom. The area is also home to a diverse range of wildlife, and traditional livestock farming continues there. Dehesa Boyal is open to visitors year-round, 24 hours a day. Check the current access arrangements before your visit.

For a hike with set details, the Camino Mozárabe offers a different kind of plan: one stage starts in Montehermoso and leads to El Bronco. It is 18.15 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of four hours and 30 minutes. Arrows and, depending on the route chosen, different colours help with navigation. Check the current route before setting out. This makes it easy to distinguish between walks in the dehesa and a stage with a named destination and estimated duration.

Traditions and Other Sights

The RomerĂa de la Virgen de Valdefuentes follows a traditional date that shifts each year: it takes place on a Sunday two weeks after Easter Sunday. The celebration includes a pilgrimage to the Marian chapel, a Mass and then a procession with the image of the Virgin Mary. Beforehand, worshippers can bid for the honour of carrying the image. If this celebration is a highlight of your stay, plan your trip around its Easter date. At the celebration in honour of Saint Blaise, Los Negritos perform 17 dances.

The Parque Temático de Extremadura in Montehermoso features scale models of important regional architectural and cultural landmarks and presents their history in an educational way. The park is particularly well suited to a visit with children; admission is free. Other named attractions include the El Ronco spring and the natural swimming pool, both counted among the natural and cultural highlights of the area around Montehermoso.

When choosing your travel dates, therefore, treat the RomerĂa differently from the cultural and natural attractions that can be visited throughout the year. During your stay, you can also choose between a hike with a specified distance and walking time and walks in the dehesa. Montehermoso thus brings together tangible historical landmarks, local crafts and different ways to explore the surrounding area.
