Descargamaría combines a compact townscape with traditional architecture, religious buildings and a signposted nature trail. There are different things to focus on when planning your trip: the town, with its lanes and historic buildings, and the PR-CC 186 El Chorrito, which is 19.7 kilometres long. If you want to include both culture and nature, you can decide which to give more time to. The trail’s distance is a concrete planning factor, while the architecture and religious buildings offer a different way to explore the destination.

Townscape and Religious Buildings

Narrow lanes and attractive passageways shape the centre of Descargamaría. The town has also preserved the traditional architecture typical of Sierra de Gata: slate-stone houses, upper storeys built from adobe and timber beams, as well as railings and balconies are all part of this style. The details bring different materials together with the forms of the houses, giving the townscape its own architectural character.

The Ermita del Santo Cordero dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and has a Mudejar coffered ceiling. The Ermita del Humilladero is located one kilometre from the town. The building dates from the 16th century and has an attractive altarpiece from the 15th century. The two religious buildings offer different points of interest: one has the coffered ceiling, while the other has an altarpiece that predates the building itself. This makes it possible to consider architecture and furnishings as distinct aspects of the town’s history.

PR-CC 186 El Chorrito and the GR 10

The PR-CC 186 El Chorrito is a signposted nature trail in Descargamaría and is a linear out-and-back route covering 19.7 kilometres. It starts beside the picnic area at Descargamaría’s natural swimming spot. Its precise distance gives you a useful guide if you want to make the nature trail a focus of your trip. This allows you to think of the route separately from a visit to the town centre and its religious buildings, without setting the two experiences against each other.

The Chorro de los Ángeles waterfall, which has a drop of more than 100 metres, can be reached via the PR-CC 186. The GR 10 also runs along the highest point of the PR-CC 186. It leads from Ovejuela over the ridge to Robledillo de Gata; returning is optional. Along with the waterfall, the trail offers another concrete planning detail: at its highest point, the routes of two named trails meet, and the GR 10 crosses the ridge between the places mentioned.

Mountain and River Landscapes

Part of the mountains around Descargamaría is covered with pine trees and dense scrub and is designated a Special Protection Area under the Directive on the conservation of wild birds. The river area near Descargamaría has a different designation: it is designated a Site of Community Importance. It is home to olive groves, vineyards, vegetable gardens and orchards, as well as riverside woodland. The two landscape descriptions highlight different features: one concerns part of the surrounding mountains, the other the river area, with its gardens and riverside woodland.

Wine also forms part of the town’s history: Descargamaría was already known for its wines in the 15th century. Along with the religious buildings, this historical detail adds another topic to the present-day picture of the trail and landscape.
