Botija can be explored through very different details: an archaeological site with a clearly defined protection category, a church with a distinctive dome, other architectural forms, and a viewpoint overlooking the Penillanura. These contrasts are useful when planning: the Botija HistĂłrica route has specific details on its length and duration, while the cultural and architectural heritage is shaped by its individual forms, dates, and functions.

Archaeological Heritage in Botija

Villasviejas del Tamuja is located in the municipality of Botija and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Zona Arqueológica category. Castro Villasviejas del Tamuja covers more than six hectares. It is surrounded by a stone wall, and its towers include both round and square forms. These details convey two different scales of the site: its protected archaeological status and the extent and fortifications of the castro.

The El Mercadillo cremation necropolis is also located in the municipality of Botija and is associated with the Villasviejas del Tamuja archaeological site. It is considered the oldest necropolis in the complex and is dated to the 4th century BC. The location, burial practice, and date are therefore among the defining details of the archaeological heritage.

Church and Historic Architectural Forms

The Iglesia de Santa Maria Magdalena is located at the edge of town on the road toward Montánchez. Its nave and tower form a single compact structure. Above the main chapel is a hemispherical dome with murals dating from 1936. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s exterior form from a specifically dated detail of the main chapel.

The Cruz del Humilladero dates from the 17th century and stands on a platform of three square steps. It consists of a smooth cylindrical granite column and a Latin cross. Torre y Escaleras, meanwhile, comprises the remains of a monumental granite bastion. Its compact core is made of slate and earth, with a stone staircase beside it.

The Molino de la Muralla is a large masonry wall. It stored water for the adjoining grain-flour mill. A dam or weir system was used to grind wheat; the structure is thought to date from the 18th century. The date is therefore uncertain, while the function described explains the relationship between the water and the mill.

BuhĂos are rustic, chozo-like structures. Some have a stone roof and a chimney to vent smoke; in the past, they occasionally served as dwellings. A Potro de Herrar served a different purpose: it held large animals such as horses, donkeys, and cattle in place for shoeing. These structures thus reflect different aspects of everyday life in the past, and their functions should not be conflated.

Landscape, Hiking, and Getting There

The Mirador del Guijorro sits at an elevation of up to 490 metres and overlooks large parts of the surrounding Penillanura. The views vary. By contrast, the Botija HistĂłrica route has a specified distance, duration, and difficulty level: it is a 13.8-kilometre circular hike, with a stated duration of three hours and a low difficulty level. These three key details provide a basis for assessing the hike when planning your trip.

One option from Cáceres is to take the A-58, then exit at junction 21 onto the CC-27.1, and continue via the CC-127 through Plasenzuela to Botija. This first route is about 40 kilometres long. Another option is to take the EX-206 and CC-93 through Torremocha. Road conditions can change, so check the route before setting off.

Two festival dates are associated with Botija: San Sebastián is celebrated on 20 January, and Santa María Magdalena on 21 and 22 July. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates in advance. This way, you can take these dated celebrations into account alongside the archaeological sites, buildings, and hike when planning your stay.
