Herguijuela brings together a history of winemaking, church architecture and landscape, with several clearly distinct themes. The Centro de Interpretación Cultura del Vino Sierra de los Lagares opened in December 2022 and is housed in a restored former mill. In La Serrezuela, numerous buildings associated with grape growing and winemaking have been preserved. You can choose where to visit based on whether mill and production history, sacred architecture, or nature and walking routes are your priority.
Winegrowing and Mill History
The Centro de Interpretación and the buildings in La Serrezuela represent different aspects of winemaking: a cultural centre in a former mill on the one hand, and architectural traces associated with winegrowing and wine production on the other. The Molino de los Condes de la Calzada oil mill offers another insight into historical processing techniques. Its conical millstone rotated on a circular stone base on which the olives were placed. A gear system powered by animals set the mechanism in motion. Much of the mainly wooden mechanism is visible inside the tower. The distinction between winegrowing and olive processing brings two sides of local production history to life without merging them into a single theme.
Church Architecture and Local History
The parish church of San Bartolomé on Plaza de España dates from the 16th century. Its main building is the work of Alonso Becerra, a master builder from Trujillo. A large granite arch from the former church is also built into the church. A small church stood there by the 14th century at the latest; the arch may have formed part of its former supporting ribs. Its possible architectural origin remains uncertain.
The Capilla de la Marquesa de Aliseda has a different spatial form: its tall, rectangular interior features up to three cross vaults and decorative elements on the ribs. Those interested in architecture will find a clear contrast here with the history of the granite arch: on one side are the vaults and their decoration; on the other is a structural element whose former function is only conjectured.
Landscape, Birdlife and Routes
La Serrezuela forms the southern side of the Sierra de los Lagares. Its shady slope stays naturally cool because of the mountain's shape. By contrast, the mountainous landscape associated with the Sierra de Pedro Gómez defines the scenery northeast of Herguijuela. This sierra is notable for its rich birdlife. The Ruta de las Grullas, a birdwatching route that passes through Herguijuela, offers another way to explore the area for nature lovers.
The PR-CC 229 Mirador de la Serrezuela route follows a concrete path, another track and a footpath, and can be cycled. This describes both the different types of route and the option of using a bicycle. The Lavaderos del Camino have a different character: they are considered a place worth visiting, and the neighbouring gardens, stream and trees provide the starting point for a pleasant walk. The Lavaderos include a large fountain that once supplied water to the washbasins and animal troughs. The route and the walk offer different points of reference for planning a stay.
Neighbourhoods and Festival Dates
Herguijuela is traditionally divided into three neighbourhoods: Barrio de Arriba, La Iglesia and Barrio de Abajo. Local festival traditions also mark particular dates. On 24 August, the patron saint festivities in honour of Saint Bartholomew are celebrated; a pilgrimage takes place on Easter Monday. The traditional matanza is also among the town's most prominent folk traditions. If one of these festivals is a deciding factor for your trip, check the specific dates for the year in question.
