In Albons, Romanesque architecture and medieval defensive remains sit alongside a scenic route to Sant Grau and Puig Segalar. This makes it easy to plan your stay around a clear focus: local history, hiking or cycling.

Romanesque architecture and the medieval town centre

The Romanesque parish church of Sant Cugat d’Albons stands at the highest point of the town. Its construction took place in two phases: the first dates to the 10th and 11th centuries, and the second to the 12th and 13th centuries. Its position at the highest point makes the church a prominent landmark in the townscape. It is a fitting place to begin exploring Albons’ history, in a building that brings together several centuries of Romanesque architecture.

The course of the medieval fortifications can also be traced in the townscape. The urban layout and street names, particularly on the eastern and southern sides, help visitors follow the line of the former structure. Its best-preserved feature is the only known tower of the former fortifications. It has a rectangular ground plan and stands about five metres tall; there are two loopholes on the north side and three on the west. Its approximate height and the arrangement of the openings give the building a distinctive profile.

El castell adds its own building history to these traces. It is documented as the property of the Torrent family at the beginning of the 13th century. The large portal with its voussoir arch dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and can be seen from the open square in front of the building. The courtyard is not open to visitors. In the early 1980s, El castell was renovated while preserving its structure and converted into several apartments.

Next to the church, the Espai d’Art Pujolboira is housed in the former rectory. The cultural centre was established in memory of Ramon Pujolboira; its current programme may vary. The Fundació Pujolboira organises visits to the Espai d’Art for school classes and groups. Arrange your visit with the foundation before travelling.

Sant Grau and Puig Segalar

The simple Romanesque Capella de Sant Grau stands halfway up Puig Segalar, surrounded by pine and holm oak forests. A path leads uphill from La Creu and continues towards Garrigoles. The route “Ruta 1: Albons. El Puig Segalar, gran vista de la llanura ampurdanesa” passes through pine woods to the chapel and continues to Puig Segalar. From there, the view stretches across the Empordà plain. Hikers can therefore enjoy both a Romanesque building and the open landscape.

The Sant Grau celebration takes place on 13 October. Residents of Albons and the surrounding area climb the old path to the chapel. The Revetlla de Sant Joan is also part of the festive calendar: it is celebrated on 23 June, with the arrival of the CanigĂł flame, bonfires and dancing. The specific programme may vary; if you are travelling for the celebration, check the latest event information.

Cycling and planning your stay

Albons is also a waypoint for a cycling trip: the “Tram 6” stage reaches the town. From Albons, it connects you to Alt Empordà or lets you continue exploring Baix Empordà. As regional route connections can change, check the current route before setting off.

When looking for a hotel, you can start by deciding what you would like to focus on during your stay: the Romanesque church and the traces of the fortifications in the town centre, the path to Sant Grau and Puig Segalar, or a cycling stage towards the EmpordĂ  regions. These options highlight different sides of Albons without requiring you to follow a fixed itinerary.
