Garriguella can be explored through a range of themes: wine, architectural history and landscape. When planning your visit, it helps to distinguish between a visit offering insights into winemaking and the cellars, a walking route through vineyards, and the town’s cultural heritage. This lets you choose which themes will shape your stay, without combining them into a set itinerary.
Wine, Vineyards and Regional Cuisine
AgrĂcola de Garriguella i RabĂłs SCCL offers wine tourism experiences, including visits to its winemaking facilities, cellars and vineyards. These are complemented by tastings and meals featuring regional produce, accompanied by olive oil and wines with the EmpordĂ designation of origin. The visits focus on production and the places where it takes place; tastings and meals focus on food. Which of these options interests you depends on whether you would rather learn about winemaking or sample regional products. As details of the food on offer may change, check in advance which visits and meals are available.
Mas Llunes offers a different perspective with its “Vi-o-Diversitat”: the walking route passes through organic vineyards in the Serra de l’Albera natural area and is linked to a project to restore biodiversity and raise environmental awareness at the winery. Unlike a visit to the facilities, this experience focuses on the vineyard landscape. Availability for this reservable activity may change, so check in advance if you plan to take the walk.
Food and Events
Held annually, the Fira de la Garnatxa i el Brunyol de l’Empordà celebrates Garnatxa and the traditional Brunyol de l’Empordà . The programme described includes wine-tasting competitions, cooking workshops and markets featuring local craftspeople. The event thus brings together food-related themes with activities centred on wine and crafts. Individual programme items may vary from year to year; check the dates and programme for the relevant year.
Architectural History Across Several Periods
The Església de Santa Eulà lia de Noves reveals a long history of construction. Built under the direction of master builder Pere Santariol between 1722 and 1785, the church was followed by the bell tower in 1883. The remains of an earlier Romanesque temple are also preserved in the eastern part. Its dating to the first decades of the 11th century is based on a popular attribution. Thus, remains of an older temple stand alongside the later church and its still more recent bell tower.
The MolĂ de Vent is also one of the historic buildings that have been preserved: the windmill dates from the 16th or 17th century and has a well-preserved cylindrical tower. It is one of the few surviving buildings of its kind in the EmpordĂ . Today, only a partly reconstructed side arch remains of the former Capella de St. SebastiĂ , which dates from the 16th century.
The airfield 314, opened in the southern part of the municipality at the end of 1937, is part of the area’s more recent historical memory. The “Pedra dels búnquers” offers a different focus: this concrete structure reconstructs Garriguella’s topography and illustrates the strategy that led to the construction of 380 bunkers. Both topics add historical traces and their interpretation to the area’s architectural history.
The Plain and Nature Interpretation
The Mirador de la Costa de la Torre offers views across the plain of Garriguella. For a different way to experience nature, there is the Centro de Reproducción de Tortugas de la Albera. It features a video and information about the biology, habitat and conservation of the Mediterranean tortoise in the Albera. The centre is dedicated to breeding this tortoise in captivity; the Albera is home to the species’ last population on the Iberian Peninsula. The landscape viewpoint and the focus on species conservation thus offer different ways to learn about the surroundings: one through views across the plain, the other through the biology and protection of a tortoise found in the area.
