Discover Pont De Molins through two distinct focal points: the Muga River landscape and a cultural heritage of castles, religious buildings and historic technology. This distinction is helpful when choosing what to visit: the Camí Natural de la Muga follows the river, while the buildings offer other themes, from defence and religious architecture to the use of water. You can choose your focus accordingly, rather than trying to fit every theme into a fixed day plan.

River landscapes along the Camí Natural de la Muga

The Camí Natural de la Muga follows the course of the Muga River. Along the route, river habitats range from riparian forest to floodplains; the trail thus connects the river course with a variety of landscape types. It is about 40 kilometres long and passes through the municipality of Pont De Molins. Hiking, cycle tourism and fishing are among the possible activities; you can cover the route on foot, by bicycle or on horseback. This offers several ways to experience the river landscape: walking, cycling and horse riding describe ways of getting around, while fishing is another activity.

Castle and religious buildings

Molins Castle dates from 1125 and served a defensive purpose between the rival counties of Empúries and Besalú. Today it is a ruin, and the surrounding forest makes it difficult to visit. Vegetation and maintenance can affect visiting conditions; if you plan to visit the castle, check conditions beforehand.

Northwest of Pont De Molins, in Alt Empordà, lies the Canònica de Santa Maria del Roure, an old monastery and sanctuary. It is believed to date from the 11th or early 12th century. The dating of the Canònica is approximate, whereas the castle is associated with the year 1125.

In the centre of Molins stands the church of Sant Sebastià, a rectangular religious building with a single nave, side chapels and a semicircular apse. It was completed in 1789; this year is inscribed on the lintel. The nave is the main space of the religious building, the side chapels extend it, and the apse forms its semicircular end. The architecture can thus be understood through its individual components and linked to the clearly dated year of completion.

Mills and lime kilns

La Closa and La Roca stand one after the other and used the same water; one of the two mills is therefore on a lower level. This arrangement shows the connection between shared water use and differences in elevation. They are believed to date back to the Middle Ages. They remained in operation until well into the 18th century and were modified.

The lime kilns illustrate a different traditional technique. They were built from stone and clay; wood was burned inside to produce lime. Whereas the connection between the mills is understood through their shared water supply and relative elevation, the lime kilns centre on building materials and the firing process. This brings out two distinct technical relationships: the use of water and the production of lime.
