Riumors lies on the Empordà plain, right next to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Nature Park. Agricultural fields and rural paths surround the village; at the same time, Riumors is home to great biodiversity. This gives the choice of destination a clear connection to the landscape: alongside the village itself, the surrounding farmland and nearby natural area shape the character of the destination.
Natural surroundings and trails
The wider region is home to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà , one of Catalonia’s most important wetlands. They lie between the mouths of the Fluvià and Muga rivers. This places Riumors’ close connection to the nature park within a broader landscape bounded by the two river mouths.
Riumors is also a starting point for walking and cycling routes with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, with the Serra de l’Albera as a backdrop. This gives visitors who want to include time outdoors in their travel plans a specific connection to both activities. Choosing between walking and cycling offers different ways to explore, while the shared views of the surrounding nature provide a connection to the landscape.
The village itself also has its own architectural character: traditional stone houses and cobbled streets define Riumors. These village features complement the landscape with a glimpse of the built environment. For travellers who want to consider nature and the character of the village together, these are two distinct aspects of the destination.
Sant Mamet: architecture and history
The church of Sant Mamet brings together several historical periods. It already existed in 1019; it was probably reconstructed in the first half of the 12th century and was consecrated in 1150. The present church is a building from the 15th or 16th century that was altered several times in the 18th and 19th centuries. Sant Mamet was also renovated and fortified at a later date. The year 1019 refers to the church’s early existence, not to the construction date of the present building.
The church therefore cannot be reduced to a single phase of construction: its early existence, the presumed reconstruction and the present building belong to different periods. Anyone interested in the history of Sant Mamet can read the dates as a sequence rather than assigning them to a single construction year. Together with the stone houses and cobbled streets, the church complements the natural setting with a specific cultural and historical focus.
Festivals and getting around
The festivals also offer two points of reference for planning your visit. Riumors celebrates the festival of Sant Isidre in May. The festival days for Sant Mamet take place every year on 17 and 18 August. If you would like to plan your visit around the August celebrations, check the programme for the relevant year before travelling. The two festivals take place in different months and offer different reasons to include Riumors in your travel plans.
In the regional road network, a local road connects the C-260 between Figueres and Roses with the C-31 between Figueres and La Bisbal d’Empordà . These two named road corridors help place Riumors within the road network and link the choice of destination with regional orientation.
