Romanesque churches and a restored lagoon give Torroella De Fluvià two distinct focuses for your trip: architectural history and nature observation. The churches showcase different periods and architectural features; the riverside woodland and lagoon area offer seasonal opportunities to take in the landscape and birdlife. This lets you plan your trip around the interests of your travel group.

Churches and Historic Architectural Features

Sant Tomàs de Fluvià is an 11th-century Romanesque church and also part of a small monastery with the status of a Benedictine priory. The church is legally classified as a Cultural Asset of National Interest in the historic monument category; the classification was published in 2013. The picturesque ensemble was conserved and restored with the involvement of the Generalitat authority responsible for cultural heritage, and then returned to Sant Tomàs. Sant Tomàs was probably built over the remains of a chapel dating from the 7th or 8th century. A Roman villa had previously stood on this site.

Visits to the interior of Sant Tomàs can be arranged through Torroella de Fluvià Town Hall. Office hours are listed as Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Arrange your visit with the town hall before you arrive; the interior is not listed as being open without restrictions.

Other buildings also offer distinctive architectural details. Sant Cebrià de Torroella de Fluvià is in the La Vila district, on the eastern edge of the settlement. The single-nave Romanesque church has a semicircular apse; its portal features three stepped round arches. At the southern edge of the settlement stands the square fortified remnant of the Ca l’Albanyà tower. At Can Sopa, a shallow-arched bridge crosses the road and connects the two parts of the house. La Força de Torroella de Fluvià is a former medieval walled enclosure in Alt Empordà.

Vilacolum also has a church with its own architectural style: the present-day Sant Esteve de Vilacolum is an 18th-century single-nave building with side chapels and a polygonal apse. These varied features—from Romanesque round arches to a polygonal apse—offer several clearly identifiable architectural points of interest for your cultural itinerary.

Riverside Woodland, Lagoon and Nature Observation

Bosque de Ribera Illa Albanyà is a riverside woodland of about 35,000 square metres near the Fluvià River. Older structures there include a washhouse, a well and other small buildings. Nearby are ponds formed by earlier gravel extraction. Trails are used to interpret and enhance the natural and cultural heritage; the site thus brings together landscape and traces of human construction, while keeping them as distinct themes.

The Torroella de Fluvià–Gola del Fluvià Route is an approximately 10-kilometre linear trail that can be used year-round on foot or by bicycle. It starts at a roundabout at the southern entrance to the village, where the disused C-31 branches off. Seasonal conditions may affect comfort; check local road conditions. In the first section, the trail follows well-preserved riverside woodland. Depending on the season, you may spot woodpeckers, golden orioles and nightingales, and possibly hear the calls of the kingfisher.

The route leads to a 34-hectare lagoon area restored in 2014. A footbridge leads to a central island; the area also includes a circular trail and a raised observation point. Visible neglect can be seen in parts of the area. The lagoon area is part of the Natura network and offers seasonal opportunities to observe mallards, grey herons and little egrets. Birdwatching therefore depends on both the section and the season: different species are in focus in the riverside woodland than in the lagoon area, and sightings are not guaranteed.
