Siurana is best explored through its historic structures: the oldest streets lie around the Església de Santa Coloma, while remains of the Castell de Siurana are incorporated into modern buildings. A route also passes through the rural hamlet of Baseia; Siurana Ve de Gust adds agricultural and gastronomic offerings to the local history. This gives you two specific interests to consider when planning your trip: historic architecture and farm visits that can be booked in advance.
Church, Castle and Ice House
The former Església de Santa Coloma de Siurana was probably a Romanesque building dating from the 12th or 13th century. A Gothic tombstone dating from 1330 is set beside the entrance. The date of the church building is an approximation; the year 1330 refers to the tombstone.
The streets around the church form the oldest part of Siurana and occupy the site of the former castle. The surviving remains of the Castell de Siurana lie around the church and are incorporated into modern buildings. The historic townscape here therefore consists of the streets, the area around the church and castle ruins incorporated into today’s buildings.
A different type of structure can be seen at the Pou de glaç at Mas Molà de la Ribera: a well-preserved, circular ice house with a dome. It was restored in 2019. Its described form provides a specific architectural comparison with the castle ruins incorporated into modern buildings. Visitors interested in architectural history will find both parts of a former castle complex and a preserved ice house in Siurana.
Baseia and Rural History
The route passes through Baseia, a rural hamlet documented since 1067. Old building structures and architectural elements dating from the 15th to the 17th century have been preserved there; medieval remains are also visible at Cal Robusto. These dates give the hamlet its own historical perspective: its early documentation is complemented by surviving structures from later centuries. Baseia thus adds other historic buildings and remains along the route to the church and former castle area.
Farm Visits and Regional Produce
Siurana Ve de Gust is an initiative of artisan producers and rural accommodations. Its offerings include guided farm visits with product tastings and sampling, as well as gastronomic workshops, all by prior reservation. The initiative has a different focus from the historic buildings: here, the emphasis is on production, products and gastronomy.
If you want to include a farm visit in your trip, remember to make a reservation in advance when planning. Farm visits are not a spontaneous activity. The different themes make it easier to tailor your choices, without needing to combine them into one itinerary.
In Its Landscape Setting
Siurana d’Empordà lies on the western edge of the Alt Empordà alluvial plain, between the Fluvià and Muga drainage basins. The Ribera de Siurana runs through the municipality from west to east. This description of the landscape adds the geographical setting to the historic themes: the alluvial plain, drainage basins and course of the Ribera de Siurana identify the main points of reference, without confusing the village with other destinations named Siurana.
This makes it easy to choose a focus for your trip: the oldest streets and castle ruins around the Església, a distinctive historic structure at the Pou de glaç, rural settlement history on the route to Baseia, or farm visits that can be booked through Siurana Ve de Gust.
