Cistella can be discovered through several different attractions: historic buildings, sweeping views across the EmpordĂ  and mountain bike routes through a variety of landscapes. The village of Vilaritg and the seasonal Bread Market add their own distinctive touches. You can therefore tailor your stay according to whether you are most interested in architectural history, scenery, cycling or local produce.

Sanctuary, Portal and Historic Village Layout

The Mare de Déu de Vida sanctuary was built in 1429 in honour of Saint Michael. It was completely rebuilt in the 17th century; only the apse remains of the original building. Its construction history therefore comprises two clearly distinct phases: the medieval sanctuary and the later rebuilding. The sanctuary offers sweeping views across much of the Empordà and over the village of Cistella. History and landscape come together here in a particular view.

Santa Maria de Cistella displays a different architectural detail: its Romanesque portal has five receding round-arch archivolts and four columns with intricately carved capitals. Archivolts are the successive arch mouldings of a portal; their stepped design gives the entrance a clearly articulated outline. The church also preserves an important sculptural ensemble on the portal and at one window. The old town adds a broader historical perspective to these individual buildings: its urban layout from the 16th and 17th centuries has survived with only a few alterations.

Mas Vida Celler winery is located within the municipality of Cistella, next to the Mare de Déu de Vida hermitage.

Vilaritg and Sant MartĂ

The village of Vilaritg lies on a hill along the upper reaches of the Riera de Vilaritg stream. It retains an ancient character and traditional architectural features in buildings dating from the 15th to the 18th centuries. This extends the view of the village’s history beyond individual churches and portals to include its preserved building traditions.

The church of Sant MartĂ in Vilaritg is also part of this historical picture. It has been documented since 1151 and preserves Romanesque fragments. The early documentation and the surviving architectural elements offer different points of reference for exploring the history of the area.

Mountain Bike Routes with Different Highlights

The MTB Trail 20 Cistella–Lladó is a 13.93-kilometre, moderately difficult circular route. It can be started in Cistella or Lladó and connects mountain, plain and river landscapes. The route details therefore include a clearly specified distance as well as its circular format and difficulty level; the landscape types also change along the way.

On the MTB Trail 22 Cistella–Vilarig–Terrades, the route follows the GR-2 to Vilarig. It then returns to Cistella from the west on a gentle descent. The two routes are described in different ways: Trail 20 by its length, moderate difficulty and circular format, and Trail 22 by its course along the GR-2 and its return from the west. These features give you concrete points of comparison without reducing the routes to the same profile.

Bread Market in Spring

Cistella holds a Bread Market every spring. A variety of breads, traditional meat products, cheeses and handicrafts are available to buy there. The market combines a seasonal event with a selection of food and handcrafted products. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the date before making your plans.

This gives you a clear range of options when deciding what to focus on: Cistella’s sanctuary, portal and historic old-town layout are at the heart of its appeal; Vilaritg adds its hilltop setting, traditional architectural features and the church of Sant Martí. There are also two MTB routes with distinct profiles and an annual spring event. You can choose the themes that interest you most for your stay.
