Breda combines a distinctive cultural heritage with trails leading towards Montseny. The Sant Salvador Monastery, the pottery tradition and routes with different layouts give your stay clear points of interest. If you are looking for a destination where architecture and local ceramic history can be combined with walks, it is worth taking a closer look at the differences between the places. Breda is part of Montseny Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 1978. The trails do not all lead into the landscape in the same way: some loop around Breda, others start in the town centre or reach the edge of the natural park.

Monastery, Churches and Pottery Tradition

Several building phases can be distinguished at Sant Salvador Monastery. It was founded in 1038 in the Breda Valley. The monastery church is Gothic and dates from the 14th to the 16th century; it also has a 32-metre-high Lombard Romanesque bell tower from the monastery’s first building, constructed in the 11th century. Those interested in the development of religious architecture will find both a medieval tower and a later Gothic church here.

The Església de Santa Maria dates from a different period: it was built between 878 and 1038. A 12th-century apse and parts of the original wall paintings have been preserved. Together with the monastery, the church offers a second perspective on Breda’s architectural history, though the two sites do not belong to the same period or feature the same surviving elements.

Ceramics are not just part of the town’s past. Breda’s centuries-old pottery tradition is still alive through workshops, modern industrial businesses and shops. At the Centre Cultural Els Forns, a permanent exhibition offers an insight into Breda’s pottery; two further rooms are set aside for temporary exhibitions. The centre is housed in a 19th-century pottery workshop. Two Moorish kilns were used there to fire ceramics traditionally. The Museu Josep Aragay also has a clear cultural focus: it is dedicated exclusively to Josep Aragay i Blanchar, an artist of the Noucentisme movement.

Routes with Different Highlights

For a short walk, Ruta 1 is a clearly defined option: it is linear, less than one kilometre long, rated very easy and suitable for families. Ruta 2 differs in its layout; it is a short, easy circular route around the municipality of Breda. If you would prefer a circular route that starts in town and heads towards the natural park, Ruta 5 runs from the centre to the edge of Montseny Natural Park.

Ruta 6 loops around Breda through wooded areas, landscapes shaped by riverside vegetation and rural areas. Its character comes from the sequence of these landscapes. Ruta 3 has a different focus: it leads to a small cliff with dense, diverse Mediterranean vegetation — this is where Montseny Natural Park begins. The routes therefore differ not only in length and layout, but also in what they bring to the fore along the way: the town, its surroundings or the transition to the natural park landscape.

Market, Festival and Getting There

The weekly market takes place on Sunday mornings around the church and town hall; local shops are also open at this time. If you plan to visit then, it is worth checking the current schedule. A special date in the festival calendar is the Aplec at the Ermita de Santa Anna on 26 July. It includes religious services, Sardana dancing and cake sales. If you would like to plan your trip around this date, check the details for the year in question.

For train travel, Riells i Viabrea-Breda station is an important landmark: a two-kilometre cycle path connects it with Breda and runs through fields and forests. Trains on the Barcelona–Girona–Portbou route stop at the station. As train services may change, check the timetable for your travel date before setting off.
