Romanesque churches, a castle on a plateau and a variety of walking trails give Viladecaballs a distinctive cultural and natural character.
Churches, farmhouses and historic sites
Sant Martí de Sorbet was consecrated at the end of the 11th century by Bishop Folc of Barcelona. During the pre-Modernist period, the Capella del Santíssim was added; it is particularly known for its stained-glass windows.
Sant Miquel de Toudell is a Romanesque, single-nave church with a semicircular apse. The exterior of the apse is decorated with Lombard blind arcades. The church is on the grounds of the Can Mir farmhouse, at a site where a necropolis and the remains of a Roman settlement were discovered.
Santa Maria de Toudell also has a single-nave layout and a semicircular apse; its floor plan is rectangular. It is attached to the Can Trias farmhouse and lies on the northeastern edge of Viladecaballs municipality, near the boundary with Terrassa.
The remains of Castell de Toudell castle lie on the same plateau as the Romanesque hermitage of Sant Miquel de Toudell. A short path from the road between Terrassa and Viladecaballs leads to the castle ruins. Castell de Toudell stands on a rocky outcrop at an elevation of about 220 metres, overlooking the valley of the Riera de Gaià, the Torrent del Salt and Turó de Can Mitjans.
Hikes and landscape features
The hike to Turó de les Bassotes is 0.53 kilometres each way, takes about 30 minutes each way and climbs 120 metres. It is accessible by vehicle and on foot. The route includes a visit to the old Forn Riscal lime kiln; a path leads from the car park to the kiln. Forn Riscal is a large traditional lime kiln beside a path in a wooded area. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.
The municipal portal provides a hiking map for walking and mountain biking routes. The GR-6 long-distance trail passes through the south of Viladecaballs municipality and connects Barcelona with Montserrat. The GR-96, also known as the Camí Romeu de Montserrat, crosses the north. Signposting and conditions can change; check them before planning a specific outing.
Another landscape feature is La Pedra Degollada: this natural formation of quartz conglomerate consists of two large blocks stacked on top of each other.
Festivals, music and other attractions
The Festa Major of Viladecaballs takes place every year on the second weekend of July and lasts four days. Check the programme for the relevant year before travelling. The Viu la Veu concert series takes place in June and July on the terrace of the Pau Casals music school. The concerts are held outdoors at sunset, with views of Montserrat. Checking the exact dates for both events is a useful part of planning.
As part of the Festa de Sant Martí, a food fair featuring regional products celebrates farming traditions and local culture. If you plan your visit around this festival, check the programme for the relevant year as well. Another cultural stop, not tied to a festival, is the former Can Turu farmhouse: its surviving outbuildings now house the municipal library, while a square has been created on the former site of the main building. If you plan to visit the library, check municipal service information in advance.
Granja Aventura Park in Viladecaballs is an educational theme park for children and adults. Alongside the historic buildings and walking trails, it offers a leisure activity with a clearly stated target audience.
