The Llobregat flows through Sant Vicenç de Castellet from north to south, forming an ecological corridor. Along the river and in the town, nature watching, walking routes, and a rich architectural and cultural history come together. The municipality is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark of Central Catalonia, established in 2011.

Riverside scenery and walking routes

A restored section of the Llobregat’s left bank is just a few metres from the town centre. It’s a good spot for walks and nature watching. Those looking for a signposted loop through the eastern part of the municipality can take the SL-C53, an approximately two-hour hike in Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac Natural Park. Its points of interest include the church of Sant Pere de Vallhonesta.

The Ruta dels Gronxadors Panoràmics de Montserrat also loops through the eastern part of the municipality, offering views of Montserrat. Another option is one of the urban loop routes: Ruta Blava, Ruta Lila, and Ruta Vermella. All three are signposted and described as very easy. So you can choose between walks around town and routes leading into the eastern parts of the municipality.

The SL-C61 passes the inn, farmhouse, and hermitage of Sant Jaume de Vallhonesta. The route begins and ends on Camí de Vallhonesta at PQ 1+160. This gives you several useful details for planning: the approximate duration of the SL-C53, views of Montserrat from the Ruta dels Gronxadors Panoràmics, and specific stops along the SL-C61.

Architectural history and traces of the town

Castellet Castle is considered the origin of the town and gave its name to both the municipality and the surrounding area. The chapel of Nostra Senyora de Castellet was built next to the castle in the 11th century and became a Marian shrine in the 17th century. The original castle tower, in the northern part of the Castellet complex, dates from the 9th or 10th century. The complex also includes a large rectangular hall with diaphragm arches. To its west are four rooms where sections of the original flooring have been preserved.

The town’s Modernista heritage includes the monument to Anselm Clavé, inaugurated as a public fountain on 2 May 1920. Local limestone also tells the story of the area’s building traditions: it is hard, can be polished, and takes on a marble-like finish. The stone quickly became popular and was known as “Pedra Sant Vicenç.” The urban route “Art, pedra i patrimoni” follows the connection between this Pedra de Sant Vicenç and the town’s most important monuments and buildings.

Another urban walk explores the town’s more recent history: on “Comerços en la memòria,” QR codes reveal former shops and businesses that have had a lasting impact on Sant Vicenç de Castellet. The two routes focus on different themes: one on the connection between stone and buildings, the other on memories of local commerce.

Festivals and industrial heritage

The Fira del Vapor recreates everyday life in Sant Vicenç de Castellet in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the railway and textile factories were powered by steam. Historical street scenes, crafts from the period, a food and handicrafts market, dancing, and dance workshops bring this industrial world to life. If you’d like to plan your visit around the event, check the dates in advance.

The Ball de Gitanes has existed since 1907; its current form dates from 1992. This festival combines dance and performance and is celebrated at Pasqua Granada, or Segona Pasqua. The Ballada begins with a procession of dancers through the streets to Plaça de l’Ajuntament. At the closing Galop, the different groups invite relatives and friends to join in. The Aplec de Vallhonesta is also known as the Festa del Panellet: it is celebrated every year on 1 May at the Romanesque hermitage of Sant Pere de Vallhonesta. Check the date before your trip.

Getting there and planning your stay

Sant Vicenç de Castellet is served by Renfe lines R4 and R12 and by line R5 of Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Check the timetables before travelling. The stone bridge over the Llobregat connects the C-55 road with the town. It is approximately 200 metres long and has two traffic lanes and two pedestrian walkways, separated from the central roadway by a low iron railing.

If you’d like to attend a festival, plan your visit around the event dates you’ve checked in advance.
