Get to know Mongat through its coastline, historic railway traces and vibrant traditions. Several beaches, coastal paths and water sports sit alongside parks with viewpoints and places that tell the story of the municipality. The sung fish auction and recurring festivals are also part of the local character. Which of these aspects interests you most can help guide your plans for your stay.

Beaches, Old Town and Water Sports

Mongat has a long coastline with several beaches. Playa de les Roques is a small, welcoming urban beach; the Maresme promenade begins there. The small Playa de Can Tano adjoins Playa de les Barques. This former fishing beach is next to Torre de Guaita. From Playa de les Barques, you can access the Old Town, which invites you to stroll and get to know the character of the fishing village.

Water sports are available at Playa de les Barques through Club Marítim and Escola de mar. Surfeja l’Ona, the Club Marítim Montgat school, offers a wide range of nautical activities for different levels and age groups. It is located at the entrance to the Maresme, 15 kilometres from Barcelona. On Sundays, environmental activities take place at the Jugoteca ambiental at Playa de les Roques; check the weekly programme before your visit.

The nearby RENFE stations and Metrobuses are convenient landmarks for getting to the beaches. Accessible parking is also available. The promenade is part of a wider coastal network: the Eix de la Costa connects the promenades of the Maresme’s coastal towns and is intended for walkers and cyclists. The first stage of the Eix Central starts at Mongat station and heads inland through Tiana, Teià, Alella, Premià de Dalt and Vilassar de Dalt. Mongat and Vilassar de Mar are recommended starting points for the Baix Maresme route (Montgat–Vilassar de Mar).

Parks and Views

The Templet mirador del Turó del Mar stands on the hilltop in Parc del Turonet. From there, views extend over the beach, the Maresme and Barcelonès Nord. The park also has viewpoints, a platform for cultural or festive events, lawns for relaxing and reading, and a fitness trail.

Parc de les Bateries also brings landscape and history together. Panoramic views open up from here over the coasts of Barcelonès and the Maresme, the coastal mountain range and the surrounding area. The remains of the guns from former military batteries can be seen on the esplanade. Parc del Tramvia adds to the choice of parks, with sports facilities, lawns for relaxation and an enclosed play area adapted for young children. The park is also suitable for walking, cycling, running and sports, and is intended for all age groups.

Railway History and Cultural Sites

The northern entrance to the Túnel ferroviari del Turó de Mongat is part of the first tunnel in the country. The tunnel was inaugurated on 28 October 1848 for passengers travelling between Barcelona and Mataró, on the first railway line built in the country. Torre de Ca l’Alsina stands near the tunnel, railway line and beach. It was originally attached to the west façade of the now-vanished farmhouse Ca n’Alsina.

The Església parroquial de Sant Joan Baptista brings together two distinct periods: construction began in 1816, while devotion to the saint dates back approximately to the 15th century. “Mediterrània,” a contemporary public sculpture by painter and sculptor Àlvar Suñol i Muñoz Ramos, stands in Plaça de les Mallorquines. Those interested in 20th-century architectural history can explore the Ruta de la Guerra Civil, which leads to historic features from the wartime period, including machine-gun emplacements, bunkers and the Bateria de Costa.

Fishing Traditions and Festivals Throughout the Year

Mongat’s sung fish auction is the only traditional auction of its kind still operating along the entire Catalan coast. At the Llotja del Peix, visitors can see and buy fresh fish on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 1 p.m. The fish market is on Passeig Marítim, opposite the Casc Antic, and is currently located temporarily in Plaça Sant Joan. As this location is described as temporary, it is advisable to check it again before your visit.

The festival calendar also brings together a range of occasions. Mongat celebrates the traditional Carnaval every year in Parc del Tramvia. The Festa Major de Sant Joan opens the summer festivities and takes place around 24 June in the Sant Joan neighbourhood and the Casc Antic. Check the municipal calendar for the annual dates and programmes before your trip.

Plan Your Journey

RENFE line R1 serves Mongat on the route between Molins de Rei and Maçanet-Massanes via Mataró. Check the latest timetable with the rail operator before travelling. Together with the beach access points near RENFE stations, the line offers a practical starting point for planning your journey; the coastal paths, historic sites and parks provide further ideas for your time in the area.
