A Renaissance portal bearing the oldest known coat of arms of the municipality, marked trails leading to the foot of its highest peak, and wine and cava tastings show the different ways to discover Sant Pere De Ribes. Culture, landscape and local products each offer a distinct focus for your stay. When planning, it helps to distinguish permanent heritage from guided tours, festival dates and tasting offers.
Buildings and Local History
Castell de Ribes has been classified as a Bé Cultural d'Interès Nacional (BCIN) since 1949. It houses a permanent exhibition that, during guided tours, takes visitors through the municipality's history spanning thousands of years. If you are interested in this historical overview, you can make the tour a separate item on your itinerary; check the tour schedule before your trip.
Redós de Sant Josep i Sant Pere combines architecture with a specific building history. The complex was built between 1901 and 1905 by architect Josep Font i Gumà , with the help of a donation from the indiano brothers Josep and Pere Jacas. It is set in a garden occupying an entire block in the centre of Ribes, between Doctor Marañón, Josep Pere Jacas, Joan Maragall and Sant Antoni Maria Claret. The street names give a sense of the complex's scale within the townscape.
On the south side of Església Vella is the Renaissance Portal de les Ànimes; the municipality's oldest known coat of arms can also be found there. Església nova, also known as Església de Sant Pere, is a Neo-Gothic building inaugurated on 4 September 1910. The two buildings offer different historical points of reference: one is a named portal with a coat of arms, the other a church with a clearly dated inauguration.
Casa del Terme also reveals several layers of history. From 1657 to 1833, it served as a boys' school and teachers' residence; it also preserves record books of the Universitat of the Ribes district dating back to 1624. To explore indiano heritage, the Ruta dels Americanos runs along Carrer Major, which can serve as a starting point.
Landscape and Trails
A large part of the area of Sant Pere De Ribes lies within Parc del Garraf. Marked trails lead from the centre of Ribes to the foot of Puig Montgròs; its summit is 358 metres high, making it the highest peak in the municipality.
The Riera de Ribes offers a different perspective on the landscape: it has eroded the clay terrain, creating small cavities known as timbes. Here, the focus is not on changes in elevation, but on how the terrain has been shaped. The present-day Ermita de Sant Pau, dating from the 18th century, also lies among the vineyards. The trails, geological formations and chapel thus reveal different aspects of the landscape.
Wine, Products and Local Events
The Llotja programme includes product tastings and information events. It also features the guided route Les Vinyes, paisatge i patrimoni de Ribes. On the Ruta dels cellers, visitors can tour wineries housed in centuries-old farmhouses and taste carefully produced wine and cava. The offers therefore take different forms: from product events to a named guided route and visits to wineries. If you are planning a tour or tasting, check the current dates in advance.
A regular fixture on the calendar is the Festa Major de Sant Pau: it takes place every year on 25 January and has been documented since the 18th century. If you would like to plan your stay around this festival, you can include its recurring date in your travel plans. Alongside the buildings and landscape trails, there is therefore a clearly named event and several wine-related offers to suit different travel interests.
