Granera combines medieval buildings and Romanesque art with hiking trails, dry-stone heritage and regional cuisine. This offers several themes to explore when planning a trip: local history, cultural landscapes and activities involving plants and nature. Within Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l’Obac, 376.5 hectares are located in the municipality of Granera.

Castle and Romanesque buildings

Castell de Granera stands on a rocky outcrop above Raval del Castell, at an elevation of about 830 metres. It was first mentioned in writing in 971. The castle preserves the walls that enclose its grounds; its polygonal shape is adapted to the rocky terrain. Its location, architectural design and recorded history give the site a distinctive architectural focus.

Another important stop is Santa Cecília de Granera: this Romanesque chapel dates from the 11th century and is documented from 1065. Inside are faded Romanesque murals depicting Christ Pantocrator and four angels surrounding a mandorla. The chapel was fully restored and reopened for worship on 5 September 1976. The Església de Sant Martí offers a different point of reference in time. It dates from the 13th century, has a rectangular nave and retains its original late Romanesque portal. The rectory and town hall adjoin the church.

Two restored public washhouses are also part of the local heritage: the Bassa del Prat at the entrance to the village and the Safareig de la Rectoria. The Aplec is held at the Bassa del Prat on the Sunday before the Festa Major. If you are planning your trip around it, check the date of the event.

Dry-stone heritage and hiking trails

At Girbau, you’ll find a well-preserved kiln for tiles, bricks and roof tiles, as well as a dry-stone wall with a well-preserved vineyard hut. The Volta circular per Granera reaches the Forn d’obra del Girbau about an hour after setting out; the route also passes Can Girbau, a Catalan farmhouse. It follows signposted sections of the Ronda del Moianès (GR 177). Some sections are suitable for cycling, but the route is not suitable for cars or off-road vehicles. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

Another archaeological site is the Tomba del Moro, an anthropomorphic burial place carved into the rock in the Early Middle Ages or earlier. It lies at the southern end of Serrat del Moro, near and north of Masia de l'Otzet. The approach follows a steeply ascending path north from Otzet. This climb clearly differs from the information about the Volta circular; here too, it is worth checking trail conditions before your visit.

For 2026, the park programme describes “Passejades trementinaires per Granera”, an approximately two-hour walk through different landscape areas of the municipality. The walk focuses on wild plants and their uses. The programme also includes explanations of the properties of a particular plant and recipes in which it is the main ingredient. Dates may change; before your visit, check whether the walk falls within your travel dates.

Festival, cuisine and how to get there

The Festival a Granera–Viu la Música al Parc is held every year and combines a walk, a nature workshop, a concert and a food tasting. It brings together exercise, nature themes, music and food in a single event. Check the dates if you are planning your trip around the festival.

Granera’s cuisine reflects the gastronomy of the Moianès region. It includes artisan cheeses and cured meats, as well as organic meat, vegetables and mushrooms from the area. These products are part of the region’s culinary profile and are not exclusive to Granera.

The most direct route from Barcelona is via the C-59 towards Castellterçol. No journey time or road conditions are specified, so check current road conditions before setting off. Granera offers concrete reasons to choose it as a destination: historic architecture, hikes on a range of themes and regional cuisine.
