Sant Bartomeu del Grau brings together Romanesque churches, other historic architectural styles and natural attractions. The Església Vella, the Ruta del romà nic and the Baumes del Molà de la Codina offer different perspectives on the town and its surroundings. Other highlights include the Mirador Roc Llarg viewpoint, designated cycling routes, activities and seasonal events. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on architectural history along named stops, specific architectural details or nature.
Churches from different periods
The EsglĂ©sia Vella is considered the origin of the village; traces of a Romanesque church dating from the 10th century remain there. It has been documented since 961. The EsglĂ©sia de Sant GenĂs Sadevesa is also Romanesque, but dates to the 11th and 12th centuries. Its semicircular apse and Lombard blind-arch frieze are characteristic architectural features. The EsglĂ©sia de Sant Jaume de Fonollet has different features: a single-nave church with a barrel vault, an apse and Lombard blind arches.
The Església de Sant Bartomeu del Grau adds another architectural style: it is Baroque-Neoclassical. Its bell tower was designed and built by the brothers Joan and Josep Font from Manlleu between 1780 and 1787. Alongside Romanesque architecture, there is therefore a church in a different style and a clearly dated construction period for the tower.
Routes: distinguish between Romanesque architecture and cycling routes
The Ruta del romĂ nic links the Romanesque monuments of Sant Bartomeu del Grau. It begins at the EsglĂ©sia Vella and continues to Sant Jaume de Fonollet and Sant GenĂs Sadevesa. The EsglĂ©sia Vella is also on the GR-3 long-distance hiking trail. These are two distinct route connections: the Ruta del romĂ nic links the named Romanesque monuments, while the GR-3 is associated with the EsglĂ©sia Vella.
For the Centre-BTT routes, it is worth checking the names, as two routes are numbered 7. The Centre-BTT Plana de Vic Route 7 passes through Sant Bartomeu del Grau and is classified as difficult. The Centre-BTT Lluçanès Route 7 also passes through the town and runs along the Sorreigs area of natural interest. A large part of this route shares a path with the PR C-46 hiking trail. So when comparing route information, distinguish between the two Centre-BTT routes by their names, not just their numbers.
Views, geology and habitats
The Mirador Roc Llarg is a viewpoint offering exceptional panoramas of the area around Sant Bartomeu del Grau. The Baumes del MolĂ de la Codina offer a different perspective on nature: they are of high geological, ecological and scenic value. Their formations were created by the erosion of a stream as it passed through limestone. The Baumes provide a natural refuge for badgers and nesting sites for individual pairs of eagle owls. Local natural attractions therefore offer a chance to appreciate both how the landscape was formed and its importance as a habitat.
Activities and seasonal events
Triescape SBG offers scavenger hunts, geocaching and escape rooms as ways to discover the culture, history and surroundings of Sant Bartomeu del Grau. The Fira Natura i Muntanya is held on the first weekend in March. Its offerings cover tourism, culture, crafts and gastronomy, as well as leisure and sports activities, including an orienteering course. Check the dates and programme for the relevant edition before your trip.
Caramelles — traditional Catalan songs — are associated with Easter Sunday and Easter Monday in Sant Bartomeu del Grau. If you plan to attend, check the dates for the relevant year. This helps distinguish cultural activities with different calendar dates: the Fira around its March date and Caramelles in connection with Easter.
